Binoculars urgently needed

Aparecium · 17/07/2023 17:56

I need a pair of binoculars by the end of the week - which means Amazon, I think.

I know nothing about binoculars.

I need to be able to see across a big stadium.

I wear glasses. Does this make a difference? Presumably the binoculars might touch my glasses, and I wouldn't want to scratch my specs.
They cannot be massive or very heavy.

What features/specs/problems do I need to look out for? Does anyone have something they can recommend?

What’s your budget?
Assuming you want compact ones, for ease of carrying? Glasses don’t matter, really.
There are 2 numbers that tell you what the binoculars are like - 1st number is the magnification. Eg 8x
Anything 10x and up is too hard to hold steady.
The 2nd number is the lens size, how much light gets in. So a higher number is good.
Obviously, the higher priced the better, but only you know how often you’ll use them.

Do you live anyway near an actual shop ?

Ive been told Reading Curry's is the only one that has binoculors on display. I too wanted some lightweight ones and needed to see them

Moveoverdarlin · 17/07/2023 18:21

Argos would do them if you have one local to you.

I’m intrigued as to why you urgently neeed binoculars 😂

To see someone competing on the other side of the stadium from where our seats are?

The reason it's urgent is that I completely forgot. I've known about this for months.Blush

What is a reasonable budget to set? Will £100 get me what I need? Once I have binoculars I know I will use them.

Argos have various binoculars for same or next day collection.

Binoculars costing less than £100 will do the job well. I got a £25 binocular from Argos which gave me really good views of the Seven Sisters star cluster in the night sky.

Depends how often you would use binoculars outside of the even. If not often, don't go for expensive ones.

A monocular is better.

countrygirl99 · 17/07/2023 18:38

Do you know anyone you can borrow a pair from if it's a one off need?

Jongleterre · 17/07/2023 18:42

Monocular -

Much better than a pair of binoculars, I find.

Monocular, 16x52 Monocular Telescope, Monoculars for Adults with Smartphone Holder & Tripod, Compact Monocular for Hiking Camping Bird Watching amzn.eu/d/clsSQfp

I was really hoping your neighbours were up to something dodgy or that you fancied a bit of a perv

PlatinumBrunette · 17/07/2023 18:45

These are a good spec for not too much - prime, and an extra 10% off voucher. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Eyeskey-Binoculars-Waterproof-Adaptable-Professional/dp/B01AFUR92Q/
no idea about the brand, but they’re a tool that will work. The 42 bit gives you a great field of view and loads of light coming in.

A303 · 17/07/2023 18:48

Image stabilising kit if you can afford it.

Plus a glasses strap because you remove your glasses before viewing through binoculars.

This is exactly the sort of thing I didn't know!

I mean, really? I'm very shortsighted and astigmatic.

What's the advantage of a monocular?

Do you have to take glasses off for a monocular?

OP posts:
Jongleterre · 18/07/2023 11:06

Decent binoculars often require two hands to hold them stead in front of you.

A monocular is better in my opinion as you can use them with one hand and i personably find them much easier to youse, less wieldy and you can use them to take photos with in front of your phone.

PlatinumBrunette · 19/07/2023 23:09

@Aparecium I wear glasses. Varifocals, to be precise. I’m also a birder, so have several pairs of binoculars. I’ve never had to take my specs off to look through them 🤷🏼‍♀️

Underminer · 20/07/2023 00:14

I was hoping to read that something exciting was doing down in your neighbourhood.

I don’t have any good advice, but I am interested in monoculars, as my vision on my right eye isn’t great so that would help me.

Hope you find something good and enjoy the event.

Indigotree · 20/07/2023 00:28

The RSPB website does next day delivery of binoculars and they have ones for glasses-wearers, I think the Avocet range. I was looking at 10x40 (they explain the numbers on the website too).
