No ideas for ds' 18th birthday present

Really struggling to think of anything to get Ds and don't want to get him things just for the sake of it. So will probably give him some money towards a car as his main present. But would love a couple of things for him to open on the day. Any suggestions of things, that aren't token 18th gifts that will just add to landfill.

It’s a while ago, but we bought DS a signet ring for his 18th. He still wears it.

Personalised number plate

The obligatory engraved pint glass

Personalised wallet?

Personalised or just general car seat covers/matts etc

Neck chain if he would wear it

Engraved watch

I had been thinking maybe a watch, so will look into that idea more. He wouldn't wear any other jewellery, but will wear a watch.

He got a new card holder at Christmas and that's all he uses, doesn't use a full wallet. Otherwise that's a good shout.

I got my 18 year old an apple watch. She's thrilled.

ds(19) loves his engraved hipflask - used at his prom and a couple of weddings so far.

I bought my DS a personalised 'blue plaque'.
I was going to buy him a Dr Who watch, but he wouldn't wear it as he loves his smart watch. He wouldn't use any of the traditional stuff, so I didn't bother.

A painting, maybe of where ds grew up

A photo book of his life - I did this for both my dc’s.

Got DS a white gold ring, he wears it on his right hand and loves it. Never takes it off. Can get it engraved with a soppy message inside if you like

One of mine had a ring
two had Armani watches( which they do wear for special occasions)

EnglishRose1320 · 17/07/2023 22:56

Thanks for the suggestions, definitely leaning towards a watch. Now to see what style/brand I think he'd like (and that I can afford!)

Still not 100% sure though, so other ideas still welcome. Part of me is tempted to just to a hamper of his favourite food with the cash inside that- no keepsakes, but then a keep sake might be more for me than him anyway.

A car, and if he’s not started lessons pay for an advance driving course to get him driving in a few months
