Audible - Am I missing something?

I'll be honest...I've not given it much time....and its not the concept of downloading an audiobook that's getting me.

I buy too many kindle books for 99p and thought I'd give the audible free trial a go to get through some of the ones I'm keen to read. Indeed, many of the book pages had the below options....with me thinking: great - this book is on audible and it will be included in the subscription.

I get the free trial and it seems....actually its not "free" so much as I have to spend the one of the two credits I have on it (for the first month - think I only get one next month). It's particularly painful to think that each month I'd pay 7.99 for 1 credit, to get an audio copy of a book I paid 99p for.

The actual catalogue of "plus membership" books doesn't seem to have anything I want to listen to. Slightly exaggerated I'm sure I'd find something I want to listen to...but not the kindle books I'd intended - not to mention that half of them promise "You own the audible narration" when I purchase them (I see them nowhere in my libraries).

So am I missing something?

And is there anything good to listen to included in the membership to make the free trial worth it?

For me, I simply prefer audiobooks. and I am unlikely to read a kindle/real book. When I'm not listening to an audiobook I'm listening to podcasts and music on my headphones. For £7.99 I get a big ticket book that isn't easily available elsewhere, plus some free podcasts and other books. None of the books I want to listen to are available from my local library. It's also nice to hear a book read by an actor or the author.

I agree it's a bit of a rip off but audio books are just much more expensive. I think my audible subscription is worth it as I do loads of driving and love to listen to a book. It's nowhere near as good value as kindle normal books though.

They're great for long motorway journeys but I recommend checking for unabridged long ones to get your money's worth. They are more labour intensive to produce but I love it when the author reads their own autobiography. Just finished Scott Mitchell's 'By Your Side" about Barbara Windsor and it was such a treat and incredibly moving to have it in his own voice. I do think they should chuck in the kindle too though!

Have you tried Libby and BorrowBox. They are feee with your library card

You can also pause your membership for 3 months if you wish. I always do this over the summer holidays as I don't get time to listen to anything complicated when the kids are off school.

Loads of Ruth Randall's are free, and they are excellent

Similar to others I listen to a lot of audio books while I'm commuting. £8 per month for a book plus podcasts is great value for me.

I LOVE Audible ❤️

Currently listening to Jimmy Connoly read his own book, Windswept and Interesting

Have a look at Scribd. Much, much cheaper. Smaller selection, though, and a higher % are abridged, but still a lot of choice.

If you go onto the page for the book you own, sometimes the audio can be added for about £4.

Bloatstoat · 17/07/2023 17:59

If you own the kindle book you can often get the audio book on audible for 2.99/3.99 - this works out cheaper for me as I get the book for 99p and then the audio for 2.99, it's less than the 7.99 monthly fee or buying the audiobook on its own.
