Missed UCAS offer (IB)

Posting in Chat for traffic.
DC received IB results and missed uni offer by two points (both in HL, very unfortunately - predicted 6-7 and 6 and got 5 in both 😞). Big shock.
DC contacted admissions but got through to 'enquiries'. They said the uni (Bristol) would make a decision but probably not until around the 17 August.
Should DC write a letter to admissions? Or just leave it be? They don't want to go to their insurance so if Bristol says no it will be retakes and a gap year...
I'm feeling quite helpless. Most of DC's year group are disappointed with their IB marks and many have called short of their predictions...

What did your DC get? DD missed her grades for Warwick - they asked for 38 and she got 35, but they still took her.

UcasShmoocas · 17/07/2023 17:18

DC got 37, predicted 39. 31 in LNAT (Law degree application).
Offer was 38 but with 18 in the HL and she got 16 - the two 5's were totally unexpected.
Did you write to Warwick admissions or just call them?

DD called them. They made her wait a few days and then confirmed. She thought she might have to wait until the A level results were out. You could ask for a remark? We asked for one but it didn’t change the results.

She was predicted a 7 in her French and got a 6, and 7/6 in her two other higher levels and got 5s.

Happened years ago to my DD but only one grade in one HL. Course was oversubscribed and she had to wait until A levels were out whereupon they took her. She's now doing her PhD

Very natural reaction. Her course/Uni is very competitive so I can imagine they are not willing to make a decision until Alevel results. Her LNAT is good so that will go in her favour. She won't be the only one to miss her offer - won't help her now!

I think all you can do is reassure her. Doors always open and often it's for the best but she needs to have time to adjust to the disappointment. - has school suggested a remark? Danger is it can go down not always up.

We have already had a remark in one subject, which was 3 points away from a 6 - it didn't change.
I'm hearing that the IB was very harsh this year after the Covid years 😑

That's great!

Thank you. So you don't think it's worth DC writing a letter direct to admissions, for example?

This exact same thing happened on wiwikau last week. Was advised to email and then updated that they had unconditional firm offer.

Not Warwick, maybe Southampton or Birmingham. Can't remember exactly.

MargaretThursday · 17/07/2023 20:46

I think it's quite usual that they'll want to wait until they know ALevel results.
Because if they already have filled the space with people who have got the grades, they won't be able to take people who missed the results.

UcasShmoocas · 18/07/2023 06:25

I think DC will write a letter. I mean, it can't hurt to show their enthusiasm, can it? Obviously there's a fine balance between sounding keen and sounding desperate 😞

@UcasShmoocas what a stress! Just popping on to say lots of advice over in the HE threads and someone may be able to help you over there. Sending positive thoughts to your DC.

None at all. I hope she gets a place.

Thank you. I'll paste my opening post over there as well.

RockyOutcrop · 18/07/2023 06:38

GiddyGladys thanks. Me too...so very much.
I will of course update but it'll probably be August.
Maybe I'll be asking for advice about creating an amazing Gap year. But if Bristol take DC I will be almost as over the moon as they will be!

Argh name change fail. 😳
