Help me or I will buy a topiary ball!

I have two hanging basket hooks at the front of my house with its very bare drive and very bare front. I need to do something but I don't know about plants and will be awful at maintenance. Is there anything I can hang from them that won't die in a flash? I don't want to buy the topiary balls.....but I will! I am leaning towards the balls!

Get the balls! We have one with fake lavender. Such less faff then worry about watering etc.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/07/2023 16:03

I have two topiary balls. Yes they are a bit tacky but unlike anything living I can't kill them!

BasiliskStare · 17/07/2023 16:05

@Witchlady - help is on hand - if you mean those fake topiary balls - do not do it. They fade and look rubbish after a while. Where I live people have put them in their window boxes and they end up looking teal / turquoise. You could stick some ivy in which doesn't need much other than watering and is fairly bombproof. & then once in a while just put some easy to look after flowers in - eg geraniums. they only need a bit of watering

But your house - your choice 😁Do not say I did not warn you - ha ha

Oops - cross posted - others are obviously happy & that is the main thing

WitchLady · 17/07/2023 16:06

I am torn, I am torn. The balls are calling

Noo! Don’t buy the awful plastic topiary balls! They fade to blue in no time and even when they’re brand new they’re fooling nobody. Just get a couple of ready planted baskets from Homebase or a proper garden centre and dump a glass of water into them every evening. They’ll probably be annuals so when the plants snuff it you don’t need to feel guilty because they would have snuffed it anyway.

DustyLee123 · 17/07/2023 16:08

I put off buying a ball for ages, I thought lots of them looked naff, but I gave in and bought a nice lavender one for winter.

Desdemona44 · 17/07/2023 16:09

The topiary balls will fade and look rubbish and end up in the bin eventually.

Ivy is a good idea, also geraniums are very forgiving if you forget to water them

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/07/2023 16:34

Ivy is the work of the devil, I'd rather have plastic! (Sorry to all the ivy lovers 😀)

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/07/2023 17:26

We have faux topiary hearts.Tenner each from Tesco. They look good.

Twillow · 17/07/2023 17:30

Everyone knows they are fake though. And after a while the plastic starts to degrade and the 'leaves' flake off all over the place - that's not very 'green', is it...

CC4712 · 17/07/2023 17:39

OP- are you referring to a plastic ball thing? Awful.

You can buy hanging plant baskets with the plants in them already- all you need to do is water them

Use the hooks for lanterns or other decoration

Bird feeder

ASGIRC · 17/07/2023 17:44

Get Spider plants!! They are virtually unkillable! And they have long leaves that will drop down from the basket!

Dont buy plastic topiary balls!!!!

Wilkolampshade · 17/07/2023 17:44

Please don't. Plastic plants are a sick joke IMO. They look tacky as shit and are awful for the environment.

A couple of trailing ivies would be pretty bullet-proof and evergreen too.

Blarn · 17/07/2023 17:49

Ivy is a good call. Or buy some ready planted into hangers strawberry plants. Bird feeders are a good idea too if you want something dangling off them but not the plant upkeep.

CoffeeNCroissants · 17/07/2023 17:50

Nooooooo!!!!!

OliveHenry · 17/07/2023 17:56

Use the hooks for windchimes instead...... your neighbours will love you 😂

QuillBill · 17/07/2023 17:56

Mine has got Ivy in and it's lasted forever. Then I just shove an annual in the other side, whatever is in season.

WitchLady · 17/07/2023 19:05

I love the idea of lanterns but can't find any that won't make my house look like either a brothel or a Victorian time slip
