Reassurance re facial injury

I took a bit of a tumble yesterday, and have ended up with several gashes on my face, as well as other injuries. Been stitched up. I honestly look horrendous at the moment. I'm pretty devastated.
Has anyone had facial injuries and totally healed?

I split my chin open doing my daily solo lock down run... had it all stuck back together mid covid in minor injuries whilst evidently not protecting the nhs. Can't see anything now really unless u look very closely, wad glad face masks were a thing then though as they were good for coverage!!!

QuiltedHippo · 17/07/2023 22:22

Ouch poor you. No stitches but horrendous facial scabs and dental injuries here, you'd never know now - just go a little pinker in the sun. Also recommend bio oil and do not pick any scabs! I knocked one off a little early taking a jumper off and it was the slowest to heal and most noticeable

Oh poor you! It’s a horrible shock isn’t it? I split my forehead open and above my top lip in a fall. Ended up with two huge black eyes too. I didn’t get either cut stitched when in hindsight I should have. My sister is a nurse so she butterfly taped me up a couple days later -after giving me a right good talking to as she was also certain I’d been concussed! Despite the lack of intervention, both cuts healed pretty well with time. There’s no scar on my forehead now and the scar above my lip has faded a lot over the years. You wouldn’t notice it if I didn’t point it out and stand in certain lighting. I looked dreadful for a few weeks though due to the bruising, swelling, cuts and tape.

I used keloid plasters once the cuts had healed and then scar reduction oil religiously. You have to massage it in. I did it every night and I do think it made a difference.

Hope you feel better soon -be kind to yourself!

Thank you so much. Yes, a terrible shock. So glad you healed so well.
Yes, I'm preparing myself for potentially a few weeks of looking fairly horrendous.
I keep reminding myself how it could have been much worse. But still feel very sad when I look in the mirror - it's not my face! I've been very swollen today, and really do look shocking!

Oh, funnily enough, I was wondering about getting my old COVID era facemasks out of the drawer for the next couple of weeks or so!
Glad your chin healed

@QuiltedHippo thank you. Yes, I'll be super careful about not picking. Glad your scars largely healed

Thanks. I've heard about Bio oil. I've also heard that rosehip oil is good. Stitches fresh today. Should I wait till they're out?

Yes wait until they are out

I hit a tree branch on horseback. Knocked unconscious, 15 stitches across my eyebrow, face swollen to twice it’s size. You’d never know now. Had a skilled doctor though.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/07/2023 23:13

A bit of building fell on my face last year in high winds. You'd have to really look to see the scar now.

Hope you feel better soon op

Thanks. I think the doctor who stitched me up today was pretty good too. Tiny stitches. I was hoping for the consultant though, but he wasn't available... Time will tell how good a job he did...

Not quite the same but I had a complaint Rd wisdom tooth removal 2 years ago. Had to dig into the jaw bone a bit and it was a bloody good thing I was under general anaesthetic when they took/dug all 4 of the teeth out. For weeks afterwards I looked like a swollen Lego figure head but once the swelling had gone down it was surprising how quickly the sockets and stitching inside my mouth healed. The human body is an amazing thing.

Wishing you a speedy recovery OP.

Froginmyhouse · 17/07/2023 23:27

I broke my own nose with a car boot. I used to wear contact lenses but less so now as I have a big lump. The glasses cover it so I’m lucky. I can’t remember my nose without it now. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Are you on your own op?

Are you on your own op?

Yes I am. In some ways good, as I talking is painful due to lip injury. But it's a struggle in other ways. It's kind of you to enquire.

I suspect that spending so much time alone is allowing you to depend an inordinate amount of time thinking and worrying about this

friends will surely rally to see you and spend time with you? They did for me and honestly - it was a wonderful distraction

You're probably right. Tbh I'm neurotic at the best of times! I've had to take the week off work obviously. Which I never do. But no way could I go in like this.
A friend took me to hospital yesterday, and I've had loads of supportive messages. But haven't felt able to ask anyone to pop round. Maybe I should...

I'm sure if a friend sees you they will be concerned and sympathetic, not think you're horribly disfigured for life.

My plastic surgeon put me onto kelo-cote. It's magic. You need to use it religiously every day though.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 18/07/2023 11:31

20 years ago I had a nasty cycling accident where my front wheel jammed in a tram line and I flew over the handle bars and landed on my face. Cracked jaw, broken nose, deep abrasions on nose and chin, two black eyes. I lived on freshly squeezed fruit juice and shreddies with full fat milk for a while. All healed remarkably well, though there is a fine line below my bottom lip where some grit wasn't cleaned out straight away. The main issue has been dental repercussions from all the teeth I cracked, which are still ongoing.

About 18 months ago, I shut the boot of the car on my head which caused a deep gash just below the hairline. Two stitches, concussion and some weeks of headaches and dizziness. That also healed remarkably well and whilst there is a fine white line, it's hidden by my hair.

Our bodies are very good at this sort of thing.

Nuca · 18/07/2023 11:31

Yes I have too after a car crash. I had awful burns from the airbag and a huge cut on my cheek from glass. Also had two massive black eyes. Took a long time to heal but now a year later I just have a really small scar area from the burns, the rest you would hardly notice unless I pointed it out. Hope you're okay
