A day in Norwich

What should I do with a full day to myself in Norwich?

Somewhere to park?
Somewhere nice to eat?
What to see?

Anyone with local info please post your suggestions. Thanks!

Ohhh, I LOVE Norwich. We were just there yesterday/today for DD1's graduation from UEA, and I'm really sad I won't have a good reason to go back there. It's just lovely to wander around.

Pretty much everything has already been mentioned, but we prefer Cafe 33 to the Waffle House - amazing brunch. And i have to be dragged out of Jarrold's Food Hall.

RedDoughnut · 19/07/2023 08:09

Some amazing suggestions here! Thank you all. I feel like I'm going to need more than a day in Norwich. Sounds like an absolute hidden gem.
I'll try to report back next week when I've been.

Now I want to go to Norwich!!

I love visiting the beautiful Julian of Norwich church and hermitage there but all these suggestions are brilliant

Gilead · 19/07/2023 11:41

Eh, Norwich isn’t rough. Ds 2 lives NR1, dd NR3 and Ds1 NR8. Lived in Norwich all their lives and never any bother.

JennyMule · 19/07/2023 15:01

Recommend Rouen Rd car parking as good value, Plantation Garden as PP have said is lovely and Jarrolds as a super indy department store. Enjoy your trip!

Divinericepudding · 19/07/2023 20:39

Norwich certainly never feels rough when I go there, it's like a mini Cambridge, just lovely

I'm worried now that we've oversold it! It's a wonderful place to live, and it's just not on the radar of most people because it's out of the way.

And if you do find yourself a bit lost, the three things to navigate by are City Hall, the Castle (the box on the hill), and the cathedral spire, that are pretty much always visible from anywhere in the city centre. Once you find one, two or all three of those, you have a much better idea of where you are. Have a fantastic trip, and report back!

The Premier Inn at the bottom of St Stephens is most peculiar and St Stephens is only really to be visited if you're wanting to book a driving theory test or you're planning on going clubbing so having to walk it daily from the hotel won't give a decent impression of the city. It's also v near the red light district so going to be different at night to the rest of the city.

Biddy's tea rooms as mentioned by a pp, is brilliant but you must book in advance. Brix and Bones is good if you're into gastronomy. Locally sourced, organic, seasonal, sustainable. Really bold and evolving menu.

Do you mean Prince of Wales road not St Stephens?

LBOCS2 · 21/07/2023 13:19

I'm coming back to Norwich this weekend for a friend's 40th and am very excited - it's a beautiful small city and a lovely place to spend a bit of time. I've not been for at least 5 years and I suspect it's changed a bit since then!

I do have quite a niche question though - is there anywhere I could get my eyebrows threaded as a walk in on a Saturday? I'm not going to have time before heading up this evening and they need some attention 😂 preferably centrally as I also need to nip to Chapelfield first thing.

I clearly did! I was sitting on St Stephens whilst typing. I obviously need a holiday.

Picklewicklepickle · 21/07/2023 14:15

I’m pretty sure there’s a place on the ground floor of Chapelfield and Superdrug also have an eyebrow bar

Picklewicklepickle · 21/07/2023 14:16

That was meant to be in reply to @LBOCS2

rockpoolingtogether · 21/07/2023 14:19

@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea you are joking aren't you about lime tree being dodgy!?

LBOCS2 · 21/07/2023 15:14

Fab, thanks @Picklewicklepickle :)

Great suggestions on this thread - I just wanted to add the Assembly House for coffee and cake in relaxed but GORGEOUS surroundings https://www.assemblyhousenorwich.co.uk/

Their afternoon tea is amazing and I think I liked their beforenoon tea even more!

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 21/07/2023 23:06

Yeah, it's Christchurch & Albemarle Roads you've got to look out for Wink I am properly NR2!

Agree with a lot of others that Assembly House is wonderful. You can just go in for a coffee/tea & slice of cake, or a full afternoon tea, wearing jeans & trainers, and you don't feel out of place in the most sumptuous Georgian rooms. It is pricier than chips on the market, but for a treat it really is worth it.

'My kids love going shopping up city'

😊

Classic Norfolk / Norwich phrase - lovely to see it on here!

I wrote this and I'm not even from Norfolk!

Glad to hear Assembly Rooms still cuts it cos I'm going there for afternoon tea next week!

Whatliesbeneath707 · 27/07/2023 19:52

Hi everyone. Thank you all for your great suggestions and thanks to @RedDoughnut for starting this thread! I had a wonderful day in Norwich, thanks to you all selling it so well. I parked in John Lewis & made my way through the city. I had the most wonderful roast dinner in Jarrolds. What a hidden gem that shop is!
Thanks everyone.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 27/07/2023 22:36

@Whatliesbeneath707 I feel really oddly proud! I love this city so much, and because it's off the beaten track for most people, and it's not really known for tourism in the way that somewhere like York is, you do get absolute gems like Jarrolds & opposite it is Thorns which is an absolutely mad labyrinth of a DIY shop, who do free home delivery & ring you to say 'are you home this afternoon? We can drop off your paint.'
It's kind of an odd mix of a market town & a very alternative city. I'm just happy that you enjoyed it Grin

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 27/07/2023 22:38

Shopping in Jarrolds. Afternoon tea at the Assembly House. It’s amazing.

hexsnidgett · 27/07/2023 22:53

I need to go home now and check out Inanna's Festival and eat my chips in Pudding Lane.
You guys are making me so nostalgic 😢

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 27/07/2023 23:12

I’ve got into the habit of having a three night stay in the Assembly House in early December. The city is lovely and Christmassy by then and I do some shopping in Jarrolds and generally enjoy eating and drinking and wandering around feeling festive.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 27/07/2023 23:39

@hexsnidgett https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/20888293.no-one-ends-norwich-accident---love-letter-fine-city/ It hasn't changed. They've tidied up the top of the market though, so now it's the best place to eat chips. Inanna's Festival is still going, as is Head in the Clouds, Beaujangles, and the fish & chip shop on Pottergate.
There's a reason Norwich is known as the graveyard of ambition. It's just too lovely to leave!

‘No one ends up in Norwich by accident’ - a love letter to a fine city

It's considered the done thing to sneer at the place you grew up, and in your case, you make it easy with the slogan you've adopted: 'a fine city'.
