A day in Norwich

RedDoughnut · 17/07/2023 13:49

What should I do with a full day to myself in Norwich?

Somewhere to park?
Somewhere nice to eat?
What to see?

Anyone with local info please post your suggestions. Thanks!

What are the sex people?! Prostitutes?

It's an Alan Partridge reference!

I'm from Norwich and am surprised to see so many people recommend the waffle House, I didn't even know it was there! 🤣

I'd definitely go to the cathedral, the bishop's garden opens to the public once a year and is beautiful, then round the corner to the Adam and Eve, the oldest pub in Norwich (from the 1200s).

If you like seafood head to Jarrolds!

Yes completely agree! They have a seafood cafe called The Bay in there and it’s lovely

Just watch out for the sex people.

What?

myusernamewastakenbyme · 17/07/2023 19:49

I live about 30 mins drive from Norwich...Im now 49 and can remember going into Head In The Clouds as a young girl....Norwich is one of my favourite places to while away a day off....I always get mushy peas from the market whenever im there.

rockpoolingtogether · 17/07/2023 19:49

The asia museum and shop near the forum is worrh a visit

eyestotheskies1 · 17/07/2023 19:53

The castle is a bit dull atm as most of it’s closed while they do renovation work.

walk along the river to the cathedral, get a pint at the red lion, wander around the cathedral grounds and up Elm Hill.

Get an ice cream from Gelato, pizza from brick, or food from one of the market stalls, lots to choose from.

Plantation gardens a lovely peaceful spot.

eyestotheskies1 · 17/07/2023 19:54

And Magdalen st is good if you like charity / second hand/ antiques shops, have a look in Looses

Damnloginpopup · 17/07/2023 19:59

Head on the Clouds never changed 😁 well chuffed to see it mentioned.

Reggie's Peas on the market. Primark. Knobs and Knockers. That sort of thing...just amble. I miss Don Miller's bakery from childhood.

Don't worry about the sex people in this heat 😀

Some great suggestions, I think it’s because I’m not local but I’ve lived here 15 years now and I still don’t get the Waffle House hype, it’s not that nice runs away

Cafe Gelato does the best ice cream. My favourite meals recently have been at L’hexagon and XO Kitchen. Shiki if you like sushi.

Carsarelife · 17/07/2023 20:04

Def go to Jarrolds department store.

Haha I lived in Norwich for 25 years and never understood the local obsession with the Waffle House either! Really there are so many other good places to eat...

Not sure where you were but it wasn’t Norwich! I live in NR3 and have done for years - in the city center all the time. Never see anything like you’re describing (unless you’re on Prince of Wales at the weekend but no one sensible goes there).

Oh hi neighbour! (NR3 here too!)

I don't recognise this Norwich at all and I'm in the city centre lots. My young teens go in with friends and have never felt threatened/scared.

I'd be interested in knowing this too.

I am coeliac so can't eat gluten. Has anyone come across a nice place to eat that does gluten free options?

I'd like to know that too. Norwich used to have a gluten free cafe but I think it closed.

I agree that the Waffle House is certainly overrated. Good for kids but not sure I know any adults that would eat there alone.

Food wise I’d agree with checking out the market for lunch, a pastry at bread source and then I’d choose kimchi or yard for a good value for full of flavour dinner.

I’d explore the cathedral and the close, country and eastern, the plantation gardens, the junk/ charity shops on Magdalene street and some of the lanes.

If you want something a little more adventurous I’d recommend renting a paddle board from Norfolk paddle boards at the red lion for a paddle through the city.

Norwichknowall · 17/07/2023 20:21

Oh and cafe gelato is great!

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 17/07/2023 21:46

No one has mentioned Biddy's - amazing millionaire shortbread

Whatliesbeneath707 · 17/07/2023 22:06

Great thread @RedDoughnut
I'm going to be in Norfolk for a week soon and I wondered if Norwich is worth a visit. I had thought of spending a few hours there on my way to somewhere else, but I might plan a day there now. It sounds great! Thank you 😊

myusernamewastakenbyme · 17/07/2023 22:06

I was underwhelmed by the waffle house too.

There are lots of good places in Norwich. I’m also coeliac and my favourite is the Assembly rooms afternoon tea, you can’t really tell it apart from the normal version and the cheese scones are amazing.
Cherry leaf coffee house on St Giles does amazing cakes and savoury foods as well. Not 100% GF but I’ve always had perfect safe food there.
Dirty hanks is a vegan food outlet in castle quarter that I’ve found good for GF chips etc.
Just outside the city we have Blue Joanna, almost all their menu is GF. Also Harry’s Soul station.
Then in the wider Norfolk area loads of pubs have good GF menus.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 17/07/2023 22:26

XO Kitchen is much nicer than Blue Joanna

JeandeServiette · 17/07/2023 22:35

Thanks @Lilyjfree. I've screenshot that for next time I come over

I was underwhelmed by the waffle house too.

To be fair I haven't been there for a while
Though great memories of it when I was a student ( in the 80's )

Captain America's used to be fab but again not visited for a while

This is the second time recently I've seen posts on here say that Norwich is a crime hotspot. Um... I've lived here off & on pretty much my entire life, and never had a problem, and neither have my DC! The best one was someone saying NR2 is riddled with street crime. I mean... NR2?? The most wanky middle class bit of Norwich??

I live in NR2 Grin

SuperSonicAyeAye · 17/07/2023 23:12

Loads of good car parks, I liked Rose lane which is sort of at the bottom of the centre, you walk up a hill to the "town" and has free electric charging.
loved walking round the cathedral and looking at everything in there, having a look round the lanes. Jorge's was AMAZING and definitely recommend.
so much history there and everyone was lovely.
