A day in Norwich

RedDoughnut · 17/07/2023 13:49

What should I do with a full day to myself in Norwich?

Somewhere to park?
Somewhere nice to eat?
What to see?

Anyone with local info please post your suggestions. Thanks!

I'd spend a while contemplating the pedestrianisation of the city centre, over a nice bowl of chocolate mousse

RedDoughnut · 17/07/2023 14:15

I like chocolate mousse!

Is pedestrianisation controversial in Norwich?

My daughter took me to the Bread Source. Great drinks and even better doughnuts.

DorotheaFrazil · 17/07/2023 14:21

The cathedral has a very nice cafe.

There's also a lovely yarn shop but I appreciate that might not be your thing! And there's a good Oxfam bookshop.

We had a nice day just wandering around really.

Justonedayatatime11 · 17/07/2023 14:22

Lunch at the Waffle House on St Giles.

Waitingforsummertocome · 17/07/2023 14:22

I would park in John Lewis and have a look around there. Then wander over to the two magpies which has the most amazing cakes. I would then spend a fortune in bookbugs and dragon tales just a bit further down timber hill from the magpies. After that I would wander down to the Norwich lanes and look around there before a drink, scone and shop in jarrolds. I would then wander back up to the car taking in the forum and market on the way.

Waitingforsummertocome · 17/07/2023 14:23

Oh yes lunch in the waffle house too…handily the two magpies does takeaway otherwise you may leave a little larger than you arrived!

We went when the open air market was on. It’s lots is little wooden sheds, and has a great atmosphere with lots of lovely food stalls .
Grab some lunch and a cuppa and sit and people watch.
We had a lovely day there and saw the castle and some of the old cobbled streets .
We were pleasantly surprised by Norwich .

So many choices, what food do you like? So many restaurants and cafes you won’t be short of options. Jarrolds department store and so nice options, the cafe in the Cathedral is also run by Jarrolds. Yalm is great in the Royal Arcade. If you just want a quick bite and coffee, there is a cafe in Wilko, M&S has a couple of cafes too. My DS’s love the market, Lucy’s chips, and tens of other cuisines. I love Norwich city centre.

Glitterbiscuits · 17/07/2023 14:59

Oh, what day is market day?

Love all food as long as it's vegetarian. Sounds like a foodie city!

Is the museum/castle worth a look?

Violinist64 · 17/07/2023 15:07

I would use the park and ride as a lot of the city centre is pedestrianised. The cathedral and castle are well worth a visit. Don’t forget Elm Hill and Tombland. The market is permanent so it doesn’t matter which day you go. I agree with the suggestion of Jarrolds - a lovely department store and a good place to eat, too. Don’t miss the Victorian arcade, either. It’s a wonderful city and l hope you have a lovely time there.

Roselilly36 · 17/07/2023 15:09

Yep use P&R I never drive into the city, Norwich airport has P&R, it’s cheap, quick and easy.

LlynTegid · 17/07/2023 15:10

Use the park and ride schemes as mentioned. The castle has a lovely collection of early 19th century watercolours by local artists, some of whom knew John Constable.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 17/07/2023 15:15

Every day is market day - it's the oldest permanent covered market in England - hundreds of years old, apparently.

Bread Source has many outlets - the one at the cathedral is best. Lots of nice river to walk along.

justaweeone · 17/07/2023 15:28

If you

ProfYaffle · 17/07/2023 15:48

The Garnet is a pub on the edge of the market, they let you take food from the market in there which is handy if it's raining. Check out the Bodega stall and have a beer at Sir Toby's.

My favourite restaurant is Shiki's on Tombland.

If Escape rooms are your thing Cryptic Escape on Tombland is amazing, we loved The Haunting.

The Castle Museum has a display about the wreck of the Gloucester which is really interesting. Because some parts of the castle are closed you currently get a ticket for entrance to The Bridewell Museum as well which is also worth a visit.

Please, please, please check out Arboretum on St Benedicts. I won't tell you too much in case it spoils the surprise. When you get there you'll only know it's open if the candle is burning in the lantern over the door.

I haven't tried The Canoe Man near the train station but people paddling up and down the river seem to be having fun so that might be worth a look.

St Gregory's antiques is fun, an antique market in a redundant church and it's right in the middle of The Lanes so lots of other little independent shops too. Head in the Clouds, Grosvenor Fish Bar and the Belgian Monk are all Norwich institutions.

confusde · 17/07/2023 15:56

There is a fantastic food market in the city centre which I love. I parked at the NCP in Queens Road car park which appeared to be in the city centre and was very reasonable to park in.

GeorgeSpeaks · 17/07/2023 16:07

Wander from the market place through an area called tombland, via Elm street and end up at the cathedral. It's a beautiful medieval city and most city centres like this were lost to the blitz.

MermaidEyes · 17/07/2023 16:17

Just watch out for the sex people.

indecisivewoman81 · 17/07/2023 16:32

I'd be interested in knowing this too.

I am coeliac so can't eat gluten. Has anyone come across a nice place to eat that does gluten free options?

ShowOfHands · 17/07/2023 16:37

Ohhh a day in Norwich. Lovely. Lots of great suggestions above.

Tell us more of what you like op. It's a great city. I spent Saturday wandering the lanes and tombland. Bought some books, ate cake. It's a great city to wander.

MullerInk · 17/07/2023 16:45

If you like seafood head to Jarrolds!
