If you have tinnitus...

Please could you describe it to me?

I have lots of low level health stuff going on including trying to treat multiple vitamin decifiencies but this symptom is a new one...ears feel blocked and a low level sort of ringing/humming to go with it but is it tinnitus or a double ear infection which I doubt because my temp is normal/no pain or something else?

Mine is pretty much what you describe, low level ringing, sometimes feels like high pitched whistling.

Timspam · 17/07/2023 07:05

Hi, just in one ear for me, like a super high pitch sound. Tried everything to stop it and even had an MRI, nothing found. The good news is after years and years my brain seems to subconsciously ignore it now.

InDubiousBattle · 17/07/2023 07:08

Mine is a low pitched hum in one ear, it's worse when I'm ill or stressed but always there. As with pp I also had to have an MRI and had some tinnitus counselling too.

Mine varies between a background hiss and a grumbling/crunching sound which happens in reaction to loud external noises.

Both much worse when I’m stressed and we’re at the absolute worst when I was stressed and anaemic.

Pulsatile in my left ear. 24/7. I could tell you my heart rate at any time without feeling for it. Came on twelve months ago. MRI found pituitary cyst but nothing sinister.

MrsCarson · 17/07/2023 07:13

Mine pretty loud, a general static noise occasionally goes super high pitched for a minute or so. It's got louder over the years and I'm waiting on an ENT appointment as I'm now losing hearing in that ear and it does feel sort of full or blocked somehow.

PartnersInCrime · 17/07/2023 07:20

Thanks for all the quick responses....so a blocked feeling is not unusual as part of tinnitus. Yikes. Things are stressful at the moment and yes, I have anaemia, and Vit D, B9 and 12 deficiencies Hmm

Mine is a high pitched whistling and is always loudest the month before I'm due a B12 top up.

DoctorWoo · 17/07/2023 08:24

I'm sorry you're experiencing this.

Mine is like a sort of muffled electrical hum. A bit like a fridge.
It was at its worst when a) I was in the ravages of perimenopause but not yet on HRT, b) it was before I starting exercising more vigorously, c) I was having a horrific time with a violent teenager, and d) before I started taking supplements.

I don't know which of these scenarios was most to blame, but now that I'm happier and healthier I rarely notice it; and when I do it doesn't bother me so much.

I hope you manage to get it under control, OP.

IHeartGeneHunt · 17/07/2023 08:31

High pitched whistle, pulsing. It's worse if I think about it.

Thank you for all your input.

This was a sign of bad anemia for me! It resolved when levels were back to normal!

PartnersInCrime · 17/07/2023 16:55

See I've been working on my iron and Vit D levels for 6 months and now my Folate is low and B12 low end of range but the ears are new this week. Will retest end of Aug/start of Sept to see what's what.

QuestionableMouse bloods checked two or three times this year and are ok. It came on alongside three months of awful lightheadedness which was subsequently diagnosed as vestibular hypofunction, which has since resolved but left the tinnitus. Am resigned to it now.
