Did a bootsale today we've been saving up for a few years for it. It absolutely peed it down everything got wet we made pitch back and £30 takings. Really gutted by it and now I've got stuff all over the house that I don't know what to do with tempted to just take all to the charity!

Saving up for a few years for a boot sale??
I guess now you've worked out that's definitely not worth doing! If you have stuff that's not sellable on eBay/Vinted then it should go to charity as soon as you don't want it anymore. Boot sales are a massive hassle for very little money.

buzzlightyearsgloves · 16/07/2023 21:26

People don't do boot sales to make money! They do it to de clutter. No one wants to pay more than 50p for anything.

INeedAnotherName · 16/07/2023 21:27

Try again next week and pray for dry weather.

toochesterdraws · 16/07/2023 21:27

Boot Sale Rule No 1:

Check the weather forecast the night before, and if there's any mention of rain, just don't bother going at all.

GetOurraMeWay · 16/07/2023 21:29

Do you mean you were buying stuff or selling it? Why do you have stuff all
Over the house?

I mean it's pretty clear she was selling stuff and she now has stuff everywhere because it a) didn't sell and b) it got wet. Not sure how you could think she was buying?

Honestly OP the key rule is if there's even a hint of suggestion that it might rain there's literally no point wasting your time.

My suggestion would be take a picture and put it up as a car boot job lot on fb marketplace for a nominal amount and someone who does it for a living is likely to come and take it all off your hands.

User1864876 · 16/07/2023 21:42

Probably not the best weekend to do it with the poor weather, if you haven't got much spare storage you might be better giving it to charity.

DH used to do boot sales, it was like a little hobby of go to auction, buy a pallet of crap, fill up the shed with said crap, take to boot sale, sell a little bit and repeat. Worst thing was he used to take DS (about 10) to auction and he got really excited and thought it was really good, I used to dread them coming home from it all

3luckystars · 16/07/2023 21:44

I don’t understand either, you were saving up clutter for the sale today?

KittytheHare · 16/07/2023 21:45

Are you seriously saying that you saved up stuff for years to have a stall at a boot sale?? Mind boggling. Take it all to the charity shop and learn from this horrendous experience.

Comedycook · 16/07/2023 21:50

Last time I did one people were offering silly amounts. Like really really low. One woman offered me £1 for a pushchair...for an actual childs buggy not a dolls pushchair by the way. By the end i had had enough...one woman picked up a handbag I was selling...asked how much? I said 10p. She put it down. I was like ffs, how much did you want it for? One penny. Will never do one again.

Hollyppp · 16/07/2023 21:55

I did one about 7 years ago with my mum and we sold clothes we were going to give to charity - jigsaw skirts, monsoon dresses etc. made £170 (not inc pitch think that was £15). But I made us take everything not sold to charity shops the next day.

agree with other PP if it’s raining then def don’t bother

hohumpigsbum · 16/07/2023 22:03

I've made the most money at boot sales I go to regularly as a buyer. You can start to predict which weeks will be busier- sometimes at the start of the summer, some when it's a bank holiday, some have a surge right at the end of the year.
Make sure you go on a day with nice weather.
Make sure you've got a good selection of stuff that will sell.
Don't expect to make loads per item- anything of value is better on marketplace or ebay. People don't go to bootsales to pay more than a couple of quid (at the most) per item.
Be happy to let people haggle.

GetOurraMeWay · 16/07/2023 22:04

@YourNameGoesHere not really. If she sold enough to cover her costs and make £30 then why is there stuff all over still? Surely there would be less stuff than when she left the house? And what have you been saving OP? Stuff to sell or money to buy the pitch? I'm confused 😐

User1864876 · 16/07/2023 22:07

I think when OP said she was saving up a few years for it, it probably meant she had her DCs old stuff in the attic or somewhere packed away and hadn't sorted it out for a few years as it would eventually go to the car boot and this weekend was the big clear out.

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/07/2023 22:07

Vinted.

GoldSilverBronzeTan · 16/07/2023 22:08

I took amazing stuff to a car boot sale. Designer wallpaper, new with tags clothes, high end make up. Made £40. Never again

surreygirl1987 · 16/07/2023 22:09

Why is everybody so confused? She's obviously been selling, not buying, and has come home with heaps of unsold items.

And why on earth are people asking what she's been saving up for years for? It's obviously not the money to pay for a pitch 🙄 she's been storing stuff ready to sell at a car boot.

MenArentMindReaders · 16/07/2023 22:11

Try selling it on vinted or ebay

gawditswindy · 16/07/2023 22:13

We brought nice quality clothes, shoes that had barely work, etc. Cheap as chips. Folk only wanted to buy the cheapest nastiest ornaments and tat. Odd places.

The ones near me used to let collectors in early. People who knew and appreciated how much things are worth. I didn't get the price I paid for stuff like playmobil, DS games, toys that are now becoming vintage obviously as it was 2nd hand but they didn't take the piss either.

@User1864876 thank you for clearing this up not sure how some dont understand, yes we store things away us or the kids don't use need or play with no more in the loft then we just clear it every few years . And now its all over drying out

Also there was no rain predicted until
the aafternoon booming weather

I sell on vinted (just to get rid clutter, not to make a living) and people on there are SO stingey, I know that because I'm one of them 😂 nobody wants to pay much for anything.

I'm sorry you had a wasted trip OP. Definitely try again when the weather is better. I've only been to the one car boot recently, it was pissing it down and almost empty because of it.

Yes it's really odd what sells. I've seen people selling really lovely things and being ignored in favour for rummaging through utter crap laid out on bin bags

amispeakingintongues · 16/07/2023 22:19

Sell it on Vinted or Facebook Marketplace! Not sure why anyone bothers with car boot sales in 2023 Confused
