Did a bootsale today we've been saving up for a few years for it. It absolutely peed it down everything got wet we made pitch back and £30 takings. Really gutted by it and now I've got stuff all over the house that I don't know what to do with tempted to just take all to the charity!

I couldn't be bothered with a car boot sale because of the amount you'd have to accumulate to make it worth doing and because people want things for almost nothing.
however I'm not convinced Facebook market place or vinted are easier. Messaging lots of different people (some of whom might also haggle -on fb) arranging individual collection times or sorting out post. Even when Ive given stuff away free there are time wasters who don't come to collect. In an ideal world you'd get rid of a lot more in one go at a car boot.

Saying this my DD, friends and niece love car boot fairs. DD and friends are too shy/not confident to haggle but only ever seem to pay 50p or £1 for literally anything. DD has bought a couple of things for 50p and sold on for a profit but mostly she buys for herself. Niece buys loads of stuff to customise or upcycle and sell on.

Stick it on vinted optimism

Op! Not optimism 🤣

At the last (and there won't be another) car boot I did a man started haggling over pencils with me... from 5p down to 2p...

My local tesco has a couple of clothing bins in aid of the Salvation Army which is very handy for getting rid of stuff. Especially if it's hard to get to a charity shop.

User1864876 · 17/07/2023 07:38

Yes the supermarket clothing bins are useful, I use the one in our local Waitrose. I also check the charity bags that come through the door as many take things other than clothes.

I think there are vagaries to car boot sales... first you have to choose a good one in the first place. Second, you need to know that the regime of value is totally different somehow in the car boot universe. Things that sell well on ebay, like 'naice' brand clothing, will not do well at car boot, whereas a gigantic box of scart cables, old phone chargers, strimmer wires etc etc etc are somehow always incredibly popular. There are things I'd sell at car boot and things I wouldn't. If you don't have enough experience then yeah it can be pretty baffling but once you know your audience you can avoid the disappointment some people on this thread have experienced.
Most of all I'd see it as a bit of a jolly, and not get too hung up on how much profit you make. Make the goal to clear your boot, one way or another.

overitunderit · 17/07/2023 09:22

I've only ever done one boot sale as an adult and I swore never again! I had to get up at the crack of dawn, sold basically nothing and ended up dropping off all the unsold stuff at the charity bins on the way back. A lot of it was decent stuff too. They are a waste of time when you factor in the time to sort and pack and driving etc.

User1864876 · 17/07/2023 10:08

Clothes don't generally sell well, we always put ours in charity bins. Tools, diy stuff sells, as PP says, old wires and stuff like that. DH sometimes goes to car boot sales for a browse and looks for stuff like tools, garden things, fishing kit and stuff like that.

Why is everybody so confused? She's obviously been selling, not buying, and has come home with heaps of unsold items.

And why on earth are people asking what she's been saving up for years for? It's obviously not the money to pay for a pitch 🙄 she's been storing stuff ready to sell at a car boot.

What for years?

Ive never heard of this.

This is what the tip and charity shops are for.

PureLife89 · 17/07/2023 14:52

I just leave stuff outside the house so people can take it for free or go to the local tip

I can't be bothered with selling stuff and dealing with time wasters and weirdos

Sometimes people don't clear out their attics for years, NDNs daughter had been left home about 10 years before they got all her stuff out of the attic which she didn't want, they had a large skip for it all. We don't put anything up our attic now apart from suitcases and a couple of other things as once it's up there it tends to stay
