Did a bootsale today we've been saving up for a few years for it. It absolutely peed it down everything got wet we made pitch back and £30 takings. Really gutted by it and now I've got stuff all over the house that I don't know what to do with tempted to just take all to the charity!

Sell it on Vinted or Facebook Marketplace! Not sure why anyone bothers with car boot sales in 2023 Confused

Because they enjoy the experience?

User1864876 · 16/07/2023 22:23

Thing with a car boot sale you can take a whole load of stuff all at once, I think listing it on vinted or eBay would be even more tedious than a car boot and you have still got all the things that you wouldn't ever list anyway to get rid of.

Frith2013 · 16/07/2023 22:30

Honestly, OP, they've always been shit.

Boot Sale Rule No 1:

Check the weather forecast the night before, and if there's any mention of rain, just don't bother going at all.

Rule number 2.

Stop off at the tip on the way home and get rid of as much as possible. As well as binning stuff that's probably too worthless for the charity shop, they usually also have clothing, electrical etc bins, so use those too.

Anything that's fit for the charity shop, leave in the car and take it next time you're passing when they're open.

rookiemere · 16/07/2023 22:36

Stick it on a local FB group, much easier selling that way.

Trenda · 16/07/2023 22:36

I collect everything we have outgrown or have replaced and keep it all in the garage. And once a year in carbooting season I put it all on freecycle and offer it as a job lot to someone who does carboots to make a bit of money. They come to my house and take it all away and I have room to breathe again.
I cant take it to charity shops because there are none on my commute route and I dont have time to take stuff once Im home. At least this way we both benefit.

Tetchypants · 16/07/2023 22:38

Do you have a local FB swap shop type page? I’ve got rid of dozens of things on there, swaps for snacks, coffee, dog food, wine etc. It’s brilliant, people turn up to take your junk away and bring you shopping!

This sounds a good idea

My daughter and my niece did a boot sale a few years ago. It was mostly top end hardly worn designer tops and trainers.
People were moaning about a second hand great condition top worth £80 being £2.and wanting it for 50p.

In the end she packed up and took it to the charity shop.

User1864876 · 16/07/2023 22:49

We didn't tend to sell many clothes it was mainly stuff like DHs old fishing kit, children's toys and stuff like that.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 16/07/2023 22:50

The problem with car boot sales is that you have to meet the kind of people who will haggle over 30p. It’s not worth it.

I've done two two in my lifetime, 15 years apart. I thought might have misremembered how bad it was, so gave it another try. Nope.

Anything I didn’t sell I put in a big box on the kerb by my house with a “please take” sticker on it. People would take away a lump of shit if you told them it was free.

@User1864876 thank you for clearing this up not sure how some dont understand, yes we store things away us or the kids don't use need or play with no more in the loft then we just clear it every few years . And now its all over drying out

Also there was no rain predicted until
the aafternoon booming weather

But why do you store it thsts just bizarre . Put it on marketplace at the time it's no longer needed or give it to the charity shop.

User1864876 · 16/07/2023 22:55

DH and DS used to enjoy doing them, I didn't so just left them to it.

Very true. People just want second hand stuff for free.

SisterAgatha · 16/07/2023 22:57

I only do bootsales on the understanding that anything that doesn’t sell gets taken to the charity on the way home.

ive done lots over the years, made either a lot of money or just enough to buy a bacon sandwich. If you can’t get 50p for something, just bin it or donate it.

Soapyspuds · 16/07/2023 22:59

That story makes no sense.

Why were you selling "top end hardly worn designer tops and trainers" at a boot sale?

If you needed the money then it is bonkers to try and sell valuable items at a boot sale.

If you didnt need the money why bother trying to sell £80 items for £2 at a boot sale in the first place? Should have gone to the charity shop to begin with.

Fillyfrog · 16/07/2023 23:03

I did one with my sister about a month ago. It's a huge one and the good thing about it is you pay on the day, so if its crap weather you're not having to turn up anyway. We made about £180 I couldn't believe it. Shame about the weather, that'll be what's ruined it for you really. We can never trust the forecast can we, it always seems wrong 🙄

PlanningTowns · 16/07/2023 23:07

I recently went to a boot sale to buy and was astonished! Clearly most people now sell on marketplace and Vinted and the stuff that doesn’t sell goes to the boot sale before going to the charity shop.

I wanted a few specific things (which I got at a good price) but people were asking what I would consider far too much for some bits given their condition!

BiscuitsandPuffin · 16/07/2023 23:07

GetOurraMeWay · 16/07/2023 22:04

@YourNameGoesHere not really. If she sold enough to cover her costs and make £30 then why is there stuff all over still? Surely there would be less stuff than when she left the house? And what have you been saving OP? Stuff to sell or money to buy the pitch? I'm confused 😐

I just don't believe anyone is this incapable of understanding the OP or the many explanations given by PPs about the situation. It's not this complicated. Are you drunk or is this the famous MN faux confusion when faced with a perfectly normal thing that naice people pretend they've never heard of?

Ifmylifewasforrent · 16/07/2023 23:09

The latter…. Goading

GentlemanJay · 16/07/2023 23:10

buzzlightyearsgloves · 16/07/2023 21:26

People don't do boot sales to make money! They do it to de clutter. No one wants to pay more than 50p for anything.

This. If you are wanting decent money for anything you are wasting your time.

Is it worth saving up the stuff all year. Packing up the night before. Getting up an unearthly hour. To come home with most of it.

Just take it to charity. The big stuff put on marketplace.

MintyCedric · 16/07/2023 23:13

I hear you.

I did a car boot a couple of weeks ago which went okay (I stayed dry and had low expectations!) but did a sesh on eBay recently which was an absolute shocker.

Not doing it any more…whole lot is off to the charity shop.

Hardtime · 16/07/2023 23:15

I took clothes to a boot sale that my daughter had had between the ages of 18 months and 7. Well over a thousand pounds new and the clothes were barely worn.
It wasn't the derisory offers but the rudeness of buyers that persuaded me never to do another.

I’m glad you said this. There’s a lot of confused people on this thread. I have visions of them wandering about, hands wafting like fainting Victorian spinster at the sight of bare piano legs…I’m confused…more like hard of thinking.
