My living room smells like cats pee

Help! Got up this morning and the living room absolutely honks of cat pee. We don’t have a cat! Or anything else that could have urinated in the house..
DP thinks the smell might be from a melon in a fruit bowl- I can kind of see ( sniff) where he may be getting this from but melons don’t smell of cat pee do they?
What on earth could be causing this and how can we rid ourselves of the smell?

You got lillies?

RoseDog · 16/07/2023 16:44

Have you got a basil plant or damp football boots lying about?

HarrietSchulenberg · 16/07/2023 16:45

Gas leak can smell similar. Any chance of that?

Do you have a vent in the room? Happened to me when a Tom cat peed on the outside vent and the smell came wafting in.

Is there an external front / back door nearby. We had a tom spraying on the porch, and it stunk in the hall and lounge!

runningonberocca · 16/07/2023 16:48

No lilies or football boots. Small packet of basil on the kitchen but it’s not that. Gas leak is a good thought - I hope not though!

New rug or anything made of seagrass?

Could be external- it’s worst at the bay window next to the front porch..
Is there anything that would deter toms from marking their patch?

runningonberocca · 16/07/2023 16:52

Can you smell anything outside the window?

idontknowwhattosay23 · 16/07/2023 16:58

Was the fruit bowl near any plumbing? Like near a sink or on a worktop above a washing machine etc? I recall this happening years and years ago at an old work place and it turned out it was a bad leak behind a cupboard

mrswarthog · 16/07/2023 17:00

New Lamp? Sometimes they give off a whiff when first used

Yellowdays · 16/07/2023 17:15

Citronella, possibly? I've not used it for that.

ImDoingThisNow · 16/07/2023 17:22

Have you recently decorated? Some paints can cause this.

CarlaH · 16/07/2023 17:35

I think it will be the melon.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 16/07/2023 19:26

There is a tree not sure what it's called that smells of cat wee/ semen horribly. Check if there's one near your window and close it!

runningonberocca · 16/07/2023 20:33

And an update - it was the melon!! Who knew a melon could smell so bad. It wasn’t off - the flesh wasn’t smelly and it did taste delicious..
But I’m never leaving one in a fruit bowl again!
