Eighties Chocolate Bars

Can't remember the names and it's bugging me -

First one was in a shiny blue wrapper, rectangle shape similar to dairy milk size/shape but a bit thicker, and was milk chocolate with a runny strawberry filling.

Second one was a small bar the shape of half a sausage that has been cut in two length ways, and was milk chocolate with a really runny caramel filling, I think it had the word silver in the name maybe.

DustyLee123 · 16/07/2023 13:03

Have a look on a Quarter of web lots of retro chocolate bars.
The owner does a blog you could probably ask he’s a bit of an expert 😊

@DustyLee123 Yes! Golden Cup, thank you!

@CindersAgain No it definitely wasn't an M&S one, I used to buy it from the Gulf Petrol Station round the corner from us.

@24Dogcuddler Thanks, I'll look him up, no none of those ones, it wasn't a kids bar and it was much fatter than a Fry's bar, I've googled it a few times over the years and never come up with anything.

Back to the days when chocolate was nice and not special editions with odd ingredients thrown in to disguise the lack of quality. Anyway I remember the strawberry one well it was made by Cadburys and was called Silk and was delicious.

The second one sounds familiar, I was thinking Golden Cup but it doesn’t match the description and it was in segments. Look on Wikipedia under Cadbury brands there is a defunct list of chocolate, the name may be there?

Chocolate was nicer back in the 1970s and 1980s with more choices and new ranges coming out all the time. The childhood thrill of being given money and choosing your own chocolate is so nostalgic (and all around here was fields).

iholdgrudges · 16/07/2023 14:54

@misunderstoodMilo I think you might be right about it being Cadburys Silk, I just can't find a pic of it anywhere weirdly, I've found an advertising poster for it though, I feel like it was a lighter blue but could be just remembering wrong

Ah my absolute favourite was a Drifter. Sooo chewy and delicious. I used to go to the newsagent for a Beano and a Drifter. Those were the days!

JenniferBooth · 16/07/2023 15:10

Does anyone else remember Terrys Moments and Terrys Nutcracker

Azaeleasinbloom · 16/07/2023 15:13

There was a bar that was rolled in nuts - may even have been a Nutty. It was a favourite. Loved a Golden Cup, the small ones were as Op described, and the larger size was segmented. A Caramel just does not compare.

You are right it was in a light blue wrapper and is not the bar that comes up when you search for it. The silk bar was a normal sized chocolate bar shape. It’s like it never existed! It really didn’t seem to be around for long so maybe that is why it is impossible to find and no one remembers it or maybe it was only trialled in certain parts of the country?

OMG Drifters I sure they were still around only a few years ago but hard to find. Mind you I went looking for a Topic the other day so what do I know!

Oh to be in a shop looking at Silk bars, Drifters, Treets, Toffos, Spira, Fry’s Five Centres, Cabanas, Topics and all. I was a 1970s and 1980s child🤣

thatsn0tmyname · 16/07/2023 15:19

My nan used to buy cabana bars. I think they had cherries and coconut in.

tanstaafl · 16/07/2023 15:21

Greets!
That triggered pleasant memories.

Was there ever a chocolate covered nougat bar ?

Would a Texan count as nougat? Or is it toffee? I know it was capable of taking out a filling or two🤣

OnenightinBangkok · 16/07/2023 15:32

Try Googling Cadbury's Silk images. I found images of it.

IHeartGeneHunt · 16/07/2023 15:35

Pyramint were my favourite!

I remember one called Daily. though I can't remember the manufacturer.

It was a bit like a two piece milky way, but the pieces were squarer and flatter. I think the wrapper was white with red and blue writing. And the filling wasn't quite as whipped as milky way, it was a bit chewier.

I can't find anyone else who remembers it!

Puffalicious · 16/07/2023 15:55

I loved a Golden Cup! Texans were one of my absolute favourites, as we're Drifters. I do miss a Fry's 5 centre- I'm now old (51) and my favourite treat is a Fry's cream/ orange cream, so the 5 centres would be divine.

I also remember a Nutty- delicious!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 16/07/2023 15:55

I loved a puff candy bar as a kid in the 70’s I remember them being absolutely huge!

Fry’s are just not the same now, I remember them being fondant back in the day and now the centres are just greasy slime.
