How do you haggle with car salespeople?

Looking to buy a new car. Have seen a 5 year old 5 door Volkswagen Polo that I like. Mileage is about 21k. Car is in excellent condition. They are asking £15000 for it.

I will have to finance it, but I think it might be worth trying to get something knocked off the asking price.

I’m not very experienced with this, but my friend says I should ‘haggle’ with the dealers to try and negotiate getting the price lowered.

I’m quite nervous and shy so I’m not sure I will be any good at it! How do you do it? Do you effectively just say “well I think the car should be lowered to x amount or I’m not buying it” until they decide to give in or you decide to give up or accept the original price? Does it generally work or only in a small minority of cases?

Anyone have any tips that they wouldn’t mind sharing please?

Can you find any similar cars for sale and request a price match?

Do your research on a realistic price then tell them that's your budget (go a bit below) and that's what you've seen on the market.
Tell them you want a quick sale and are willing to buy today if they get the price right down.

Second hand cars are still attracting a premium and VW in particular are more expensive generally. DH had a Golf that he sold for more than he paid for it.

You could try getting them to extend the warranty, free servicing, adding in some extras perhaps.

Just don't buy any paint protection that they try to sell you

That’s overpriced…I bought a 2.5 year old polo with under 10k mileage a couple of months back for £15k…when you’re buying you need to be prepared to walk away of the numbers aren’t right, I walked away from 2 as they were giving a rubbish trade in…polos are in plentiful supply, there are many more out there if you don’t like the deal

Agree that's massively over priced. I bought a one year old Polo with about 5k miles on it last year for not much more than that. Just state what you're willing to pay and be prepared to walk away if they don't reduce the price.

I paid just over that for a brand new Seat Ibiza a few months ago, which is essentially the same car as a polo. If you work in public sector then Motorfinity offer some very good prices (and do not negotiate, the price is the price). https://www.motorfinity.uk/car-manufacturer/seat/ibiza-hatchback/
