What laundry products make everything smell nice?

I'm fed up of the boring jobs and looking to at least feel like doing laundry is worth it. I've seen adverts for tallow and ash which is a new company and claim to smell amazing. But it's not cheap - is it worth it?
What do you use that keeps your washing smelling lovely?

Drying outside. No chemicals needed.

NCTDN · 15/07/2023 22:25

Everything goes on the line whenever possible. But they don't come out of the washing machine smelling amazing and that's what I'd like.

Persil bio pods are the best I've used recently.

I don't want my washing smelling of Oudh and vanilla and lotus blossom and what have you, I want clean and zingy fresh smelling.

I like the Fairy outdoorables fabric softener, it smells fresh without being overpowering.

rainbowlou · 15/07/2023 22:59

I put zoflora or Astonish disinfectant in the fabric conditioner drawer and that makes clothes smell nice.
I love unstoppables but they’re so expensive I only get them when they’re on special offer.

UndercoverCop · 15/07/2023 23:02

M&S fabric conditioner and ecover detergent, if you want more heavily fragranced Dettol or Tesco laundry cleanser. I use it if DS has been unwell, if there are any accidents, and with towels instead of fabric softener.

bonfirebash · 15/07/2023 23:14

Tallow and ash do smell really good, I had a couple of samples
I also like the scent boosters, using a lenor one at the minute with persil powder

twilightcafe · 15/07/2023 23:19

M&S Sandalwood and Bergamot laundry liquid and fabric conditioner make clothes smell like a cuddle: all warm, comforting and inviting

NCTDN · 16/07/2023 08:31

@bonfirebash are tallow and ash worth the money?
Are unstoppables fabric conditioners?

Scent boosters, dry outside, give your washing machine a clean now and then.

ThreeRingCircus · 16/07/2023 08:38

A capful of Zoflora in the fabric softener drawer and making sure the washing machine is regularly cleaned.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/07/2023 08:39

Agreed, drying outside is the best for lovely clean smelling laundry.

I hate artificial, over scented washing liquid. I have recently discovered Wilton an eco friendly liquid that uses essential oils, the cederwood one is great - a subtle natural smell. It is not cheap but Sainsbury's often do special offers so I stock up then.

Bold exotic night bloom gel and comfort spring awakening FS. Cheap and smells gorgeous straight out of machine. Even after stuff been in drawers for a bit you can still smell it😊

PixiePirate · 16/07/2023 08:48

Line dried but use scented ironing water.

AuntieJune · 16/07/2023 08:50

Good old fashioned lavender sachet where you store things. Plus line drying where possible.

Can't stand the smell of scented washing powders, it's just chemicals.

5childrenand · 16/07/2023 08:51

Method and a clean washing machine.

Which colour is spring awakening? I thought that was lenor!

Tiredjoanna · 16/07/2023 08:58

You probably right, it's the blue one. Forgive me, 9mo decided 4am was great time to wake up today🤣

orangeclubsarebest · 16/07/2023 08:58

I got some bold pods to see me through until I can get to Costco...they smell amazing! Expensive so won't stick with them but they do smell good.

Augend23 · 16/07/2023 08:59

The unstoppables/other scent boosters do work. I think they are often on offer in Home Bargains/Wilkos/Savers and much cheaper than the supermarket so probably one to get from there if you want to try them.

I don't use them very often but I have a packet in for the occasions when I want them. You don't need to use the volumes specified, you can use much less.

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/07/2023 09:00

Lenor fabric conditioner
Tesco tumble dryer sheets
Iron your clothes

Glitterandunicorns · 16/07/2023 09:04

The blue Unstoppables are amazing. My parents use them and as well as smelling beautiful, the scent lasts for weeks on garments when you've not worn something for a while after washing it.

ThePoshUns · 16/07/2023 09:05

When I'm in France or Spain I buy laundry products that are scented with Savon de Marseilles. The smell is amazing. I wish they sold it here.

FamilyAreEverything · 16/07/2023 09:14

Smol. They smell amazing. It’s a subscription service but I think it’s good value and it’s also very environmentally friendly. I gave the washing pods a go 12 months ago and now I use their fabric softener, stain gel, surface cleaner, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets. I’d never go back.

But also, regularly cleaning your washing machine, especially if you wash regularly at low temperatures.

BertieBotts · 16/07/2023 09:14

Bold washing powder, and vinegar in place of fabric softener worked for me when I lived in the UK.

Now I can't get Bold, I find that pods smell nicest, I liked the smell of the ones my SIL uses so I found a local alternative. I can't remember what the UK one was, but this is the one I found which is in the same box, so probably equivalent. https://www.dm.de/spee-colorwaschmittel-caps-power-p4015200031521.html

And yes to the unstoppables, they are probably awful and cost a ridiculous amount but I buy a couple of bottles when they are on offer. You have to use more than I'd want to.

Don't use extra rinse on the machine, as it rinses out more of the scent. If you have sensitive skin, you probably can't really do the extra scents (try the vinegar trick instead).

You need to get the washing out as soon as it's finished, don't leave it in the machine for hours. And dry quickly. So tumble dryer or outside on a sunny or windy day, or airer but with lots of space between stuff so it isn't hanging around damp. The tower or balcony shape airers are best for this.

And clean out your washing machine filter. If you're getting a vague smell of stale socks, it's probably the filter.

Do a hot wash every few weeks in the machine (60+) and include anything that has a smell that doesn't wash out.

Do a cleaning cycle (90 degree wash, only vinegar or soda crystals) once every 6-12 months. Probably more frequently if you wash with lots of liquid type detergents.
