Help-frozen gateau stored in fridge accidentally for 24 hours before being put back in freezer! Will we die after eating it?

Earlier this week I had a frozen strawberry gateau delivered in the Tesco delivery. One of the DCs put it in the fridge, not realising it needed to go in the freezer as per ‘keep frozen’ instruction on box.

The next day, I realised the error and moved it back to the freezer. Now I’m worrying that when I take it out on Sunday it won’t be safe to eat, as I’m hopeless at understanding the food safety rules about when food that has been previously frozen is safe to re-freeze.

Many thanks in advance.

You will die after you've eaten it in maybe 40 years time . Death by gateau- delightful

Peony654 · 14/07/2023 16:34

Of course not.... so much sugar you could probably leave it out on the side

It will be fine!!

Yes, sorry. You will all die a gruesome death later on Sunday evening.

TheNestedIf · 14/07/2023 17:35

Personally, I wouldn't eat it. There's dairy in it. I once ate ice-cream that I didn't realise had partially defrosted and then was refrozen, and I ended up with food poisoning.

TheModHatter · 14/07/2023 17:40

I think it will be fine.

It was defrosted in the fridge so didn’t reach room temperature, wasn’t unwrapped so didn’t acquire any extra bacteria, refrozen for a short time.

If the cream seems cheesy or off when you next defrost it, don’t eat it!

FrivolousTreeDuck · 14/07/2023 17:42

Look at the ingredients - if there are 'preservatives' and so on you'll be fine.

Noorandapples · 14/07/2023 17:47

Yes you will, send it to me

DuchessOfSausage · 14/07/2023 17:49

Yes. We will all die after you've eaten it.

SophiaElizabethGrace · 14/07/2023 17:50

You'll be absolutely fine.

VisionsOfSplendour · 14/07/2023 17:51

You will 100% die, eating cake from a fridge rather than a freezer is always in the top 10 causes of premature death every year

I actually can't tell if this is a serious thread 😀

LaterHarold · 14/07/2023 17:53

It'll be fine. If you're worried, smell the cream before anyone eats it - you will know immediately if it's off it won't be

Cheezecake · 14/07/2023 18:42

If you do die, you need to tell us so we know not to make the same mistake.

TenOhSeven · 14/07/2023 18:44

It was nice knowing you OP.

Maelil01 · 14/07/2023 18:46

I’ve cream is v different from cream. Cream will be fine in this situation.

Summergarden · 14/07/2023 20:33

Haha, I’m still fine thanks as not eaten it yet!

Think I’ll let it defrost then sniff and taste a tiny bit before anyone else does.

I’d have told the family it was ruined and be sat in the bath eating that gateau for one if I were you to be honest….

gogomoto · 14/07/2023 20:48

It's going to be fine but I wouldn't want to store it for too long. Good excuse to eat it. Generally I find if I try to defrost in the fridge after 24 hours it's barely slushy
