Is there a free website to check how much car tax is?

There are rate tables on the government website: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables

Depending on the year of the car and its engine/emissions will determine what table you will use.

Take a a 64 plate diesel with 99 co2/km - I'l look at the "before 2017" table and find the bracket the emissions come in at. (band A - £0)... Disappointingly the same car, as an 18 plate would £180

Generally if you are shopping for a new car, the website will put the tax band, and even the price in the description.

I can't seem to find a website that is just "put a reg in" and Ta-dah! But if you have a car in mind, and struggle with the tables, I'm sure we can work out what bracket it would fall under!
