Trans surgery chat

Is it ok to ask a trans person if they are planning on having surgery to complete the change of their gender?

Example, female is now identifying as a male. Very much looks and dresses like one but still has a vagina, is it ever ok to ask if they plan on having surgery? If not, what is correct?

I work with a range of people, some who are trans, and want to make sure that the conversations that are had in the workplace are correct. I know people can be curious so want to get ahead to educate before someone is offended.

I think it’s fairly obvious that talking to someone about their genitalia is NOT a conversation for the workplace.

applepie72 · 14/07/2023 13:31

@WorkingItOutAsIGo thank you! I just needed someone to confirm this in writing so I'm not the one looking like an idiot telling them NOT to say this.

Absolutely not.
Their medical information is private. Their genitals are off limits as a topic of conversation, just as anyone else's genitals would be.

Crinkle77 · 14/07/2023 13:32

No it isn't appropriate to ask that.

applepie72 · 14/07/2023 13:33

@pbdr thank you. Keep these coming so I can show this thread as evidence to keep their mouth closed and just be supportive.

You don't need to show this thread as evidence. Surely it's just enough to say it isn't appropriate. Are you their manager?

applepie72 · 14/07/2023 13:34

@Crinkle77 colleague. You'd be surprised. I work with idiots.
