How often do you get scam calls/msgs/emails?

I’m starting to feel like I’m being targeted. I’m careful with my details online. Don’t give personal details out to many people.
But constantly receive scamming attempts.
How often do you get scam messages?
Ive had someone persistently WhatsApp me where it looks like they are having a conversation even though I have never replied. They frequently send links to try and get me to click on them (the same person). They also have tried phoning me and video calling me. I also receive frequent scam text messages and daily scam calls from other sources.
Between us we have been sent hundreds of scam emails from HMRC, Facebook attempted logins and fake ‘missed you’ deliveries (almost 100 just this week).
We rarely receive post. Royal Mail just say they haven’t had any other complaints from people in our area, but I feel like our data has been compromised.
Is all of this happening as frequently to you? Is this just modern living?

It depends sometimes I don’t get it for weeks then I’ll get a couple of scam calls in one week and less frequently a scam text.

I have had a handful of scam WhatsApp chats over the past year .

It’s all quite common I guess nowadays but you do seem to be having a higher than normal amount of these scam communications. It does sound like your data has been compromised.

I’m curious - why haven’t you blocked the person on WhatsApp?

mindutopia · 13/07/2023 15:58

Emails, every day. But not many people/places have my phone number, so messages/calls fairly infrequently. I suspect your number has ended up on a list somewhere, perhaps because you have inadvertently clicked on something, which has meant you were flagged as an easy target.

I get calls fairly often. At least one a month.

Calls very rarely (like once a month) because I don't engage, just cut the call. Emails - went through a spate of them on Outlook the last few weeks, OL now seems to have fixed their spam filters.

Hardly any, had a couple of text about Apple wallet in the past year but that's about it. DH gets a lot of scam texts and phonecalls but he uses WhatsApp and Facebook, I don't.

Rollercoaster1920 · 13/07/2023 16:10

I get hundreds of emails daily. Currently getting a phone call a day from 'the claims department', get a few scam texts a month and occasionally a what's app.

Sadly it's modern living. I blame linkedin for leaking my email and phone number a few years back when they were hacked.

I've developed a suspicious phone answering voice, I pretty anyone actually calling me legitimately.

Spanielsarepainless · 13/07/2023 16:16

Hardly any at the moment. 'John Pidgeon' keeps sending odd emails with a link to photos I have either been waiting for, or of loads of people I know. I don't think so. HMRC ones have dried up too.

I haven’t opened the WhatsApp thread. I read the messages on my Home Screen and the accumulated texts are next to the persons names ‘unread’, but read through the home screen. I’m worried to open their chat thread incase the links automatically infect my phone with something. I don’t think you can block someone on there if you don’t open the chat thread, can you?

Never on WhatsApp or by post. Every day by email (probably about 10 average) and most days by phone at the minute, mostly trying to help me with my social housing repairs (I do not have social housing).

Kingsparkle · 13/07/2023 16:44

I get quite a lot of emails and some calls but my email and phone number are pretty old so will have been in a fair few data breaches I imagine. I forward scam emails to the government phishing email and any scam texts to my provider. They probably do sweet FA with them but makes me feel a bit better. I notice they will call down a bit, like at the moment I get 1-2 spam emails a day in my junk folder but some times it’s 20-30 for a week or so before reverting back to 1-2.

The calls seem to go in cycles. I will get 2 or 3 in a day and then nothing for months and months. I just don’t answer and if they don’t leave a message I block.

User10486743 · 13/07/2023 16:50

I try to use Apple 'hide my email' on a lot of things like MN and Twitter and stuff that isn't very important so my email address isn't too out there

EversoDetermined · 13/07/2023 16:59

Work email - several a day (I also blame LinkedIn)
Personal email - virtually never
Whatsapp - never
Text - one or two a year
Phone calls (mobile) - maybe 3 or 4 a year.
I have always registered my phone numbers with the telephone preference service.

Mine's supposed to be rregistered but I still get a few a month offering to help me with the accident I had. The ones that sound like they're in Mandarin seem to have stopped.

EversoDetermined · 13/07/2023 17:08

I was on a thread about those "accident you had" ones last week. I used to get 2 or 3 a year of those but haven't had one for ages now, just the odd one claiming to be from EE or Santander.

Heavensalongwayaway · 13/07/2023 17:15

very few. Do you shop on specific sites? My Dsis uses Amazon a lot and gets loads of them after a buy

andymary · 13/07/2023 17:18

Getting around 10 scammy emails a day, and 1 - 2 texts once a month.
Throw in the odd Password Reset email that wasn't done by me.

This could be partially to blame for mine then, because I also shop on Amazon.

A couple of times a week. Mainly from the scammy loft insulation woman who has on occasion rung me multiple times a day from a different number each time.

I am so so sick of her dreadful voice that next time I'm going to tell her just how grating she sounds.

mummyh2016 · 13/07/2023 19:15

I get 1-2 a month off someone pretending to be from o2. I haven't been with O2 for probably 18 months so I'm presuming it's from an old data breach from there.

That's interesting. I started getting over 10 spam emails daily following a purchase on Amazon - 3rd party seller but Amazon delivery.

The seller sent several requests for me to leave feedback then the spam started. Mainly the attempted delivery ones. It goes quiet for a few days then starts up again when, I assume, the list I'm on gets sold on.

PurpleButterflyWings · 13/07/2023 20:19

Anything from 5-10 spam emails a week.

Around 10 spam/scam calls to our mobile phones a month.

Around 8-10 scam texts to our phones.

3 or 4 scam/spam phone calls on our landline a month.

@WishScammersWouldFOff The amount you have is a LOT. That much would worry me - not gonna lie.
