Going crazy with itchiness/formication

For the last 3 days I have felt itchy. It moves around my body. So I'll itch on my face, then my leg, then my neck then my arm. It's not itching all over at once if that makes sense.

It's sometimes an itch I feel like scratching but can also feel like something crawling on me.

The feeling is so convincing I keep looking at my legs fully expecting to see a little spider there or something. But nothing.

It was occasional the last couple of days and mostly around my hands but pretty constant today and all over. I'm struggling to concentrate.

I would make a GP appointment but I have literally nothing to show for it. No dry skin, no redness, no rash. I don't have a cold or virus or anything.

Any idea before I conclude I am going mad?

I feel similarly itchy and mentioned in passing to my GP. She's going to test for kidney disease of some kind, itchiness is a symptom. No other symptoms. Get it checked out.

Whatswrongwithmelily · 13/07/2023 13:45

Thanks @newnamethanks do you get the crawling sensation too? What does the test for kidneys involve?

I had a blood test not that long ago and it was all fine so I'm at a loss.

Give the GP a call. You probably need a blood test for U+E, LFT and bile acids just to rule out anything being wonky with your liver.

No, no crawling, thank heavens, just general itchiness. Just blood tests arranged so far. Do contact your doctor though, they may not have carried out the tests you need. Good luck.

How old are you? Formication can be a perimenopause symptom.

Whatswrongwithmelily · 13/07/2023 15:30

@FuglyHouse I saw that and wondered. I'm "only" 38.

Starting to worry I have some sort of weird parasite though surely I'd have spots. Urgh. Best call GP for reassurance if nothing else.

I'm 40 and itchy as hell with no reason. Had tests. Dr's put it down to perimenopause

FuglyHouse · 13/07/2023 15:55

It was one of my first symptoms, I thought I was going mad as there never seemed to be any obvious reason.

Whatswrongwithmelily · 13/07/2023 16:01

Oh god I can't live the rest of my life like this!!
@Friarclose sympathies! Do you get the crawling sensation too or just the itch? It's driving me mad

I get both but mainly itching. Weirdly under my armpits is the worst place!!

newnamethanks · 14/07/2023 12:03

Try taking an antihistamine. If may lessen the itch to something bearable.

pristinequeen · 14/07/2023 12:40

I get that when I'm trying to sleep. I think initially I have an itch and then another and then I'm waiting for more subconsciously. I found when I ignore it/ don't itch it it goes away.
