Has anybody forgotten to pay their car tax before? I’m a week late and it stupidly slipped my mind!
Ive paid it now but worries I’ll get in trouble?

About four years ago, I forgot to pay mine for nearly three weeks.
Like you, I paid it as soon as I realized, and I was worried about getting in trouble, but nothing happened. No warning letter, nothing.
Hopefully, especially as yours was only a week late, it will be the same for you.

Get it moved to auto direct debit, you just get an email once a year to say it's been renewed

Yeah I do this now. Saves having to pay it all at once.

Yeah I never seem to get the reminder letters so forgot for about 3 weeks once, funnily enough this year they've actually sent me not one but two letters!

DS had 2 letters this week. DVLA must have decided to kill some extra trees.

You’ll be fine - I got a reminder about mine (think approx month late)

CornishGem1975 · 13/07/2023 08:05

Yeah I forgot for a few weeks. Nothing happened but in the past friends/family have received a 'last chance to pay' letter before a fine anyhow.

gingeristhenewblack43 · 13/07/2023 08:12

@whatatime @Spacie I got 2 letters too! Thought I was special but obviously not!

I panicked it was 2 speeding fines at first Grin

My reminder letters come too soon, meaning that by the time payment is due, the reminder has been sitting on the kitchen worktop long enough for me to stop 'seeing' it!

GCSister · 13/07/2023 08:40

I wouldn't worry, my neighbour was driving around in an untaxed car for 8 months before anything happened.
He was reported a number of times and it still took months for the DVLA to do anything.
He was also uninsured and had no MOT! Nobody cared 🤷🏼‍♀️

MogTheMoogle · 13/07/2023 08:54

I'd left mine for about a week (and went down motorways and everything). Had very little excuse as its a zero rated one...

May have panicked slightly expecting some sort of ticket in the post. None came.

Have also driven technically uninsured for a couple of months. I'd changed my car over the phone, and they'd recorded the reg as AB12 CBE rather than AB12 CVE (not my real regs). Only realised when I then subsequently changed my address and the insurance couldn't find on my number plate...

Again no letters or being pulled over. It was definitely the insurers fault as the reg they'd put in didn't even exist let alone match my car. But partly...I should have checked my new documents....

hettiethehare · 13/07/2023 08:54

We never got the initial reminder letter last year so only paid when we got the red letter a month later. Nothing happened.

Also received 2
