Childfree London day out…help please!

3isthemagicnumberrr · 12/07/2023 20:00

To celebrate DH’s big birthday we have a child-free day out in London in a couple of weeks.

We live in S London but don’t have the chance to do much in town any more thanks to small DC.

So….help me plan a great day/ evening out PLEASE! I was thinking matinee show (his request) but what else?

Any ideas most welcome.

London dungeons?

You what? why would anyone who has a child free day want to go there?

AlphaAlpha · 12/07/2023 21:03

So many variables!
What do you enjoy?
What music or theatre do you like? What food is your favourite or are you willing to try something completely different?

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 12/07/2023 21:04

Non-child friendly theatre show?

Sorry, didn't mean to quote OP.

Peony654 · 12/07/2023 21:06

Definitely not the London dungeons. What about the Sky Garden for a cocktail and the view? Afternoon matinee sounds good too. I love walking by the Regents Canal. Or a boat trip on Thames?

changer121 · 12/07/2023 21:08

If it was us - we would see operation mincemeat or guys and dolls as a matinee, then drinks on the terrace of the oxo tower or similar.
Then head to a lovely restaurant for dinner like Franco's in Jerman street.

If that's not your idea of fun - borough market,Tate modern ,walk along the south bank, walking tour of west end,go to Eataly and eat loads of yummy Italian dishes etc

LonginesPrime · 12/07/2023 21:10

Since the show will dictate where you'll need to be and when, I would start with choosing/booking that, then looking around at what's relatively nearby in terms of eating, sightseeing, etc.

You don't want to spend all day rushing around to get across town so if you want a relaxing day, I'd aim not to be too ambitious and stick to a relatively small area.

That said, obviously there will be a lot to do within easy distance of whatever theatre you end up going to, so if you can pinpoint the likely theatres or general area, I'm sure people will pipe up to recommend good places around there.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 12/07/2023 21:16

How about this? down the Thames on a speedboat

NorthWestThree · 12/07/2023 21:18

Bottomless afternoon tea and a comedy show in the evening

AffIt · 12/07/2023 21:18

What do you like?

If you're looking to see a show, a day out in Covent Garden is always fun: my office is there, let me know if you want tips for restaurants etc.

If you're on Instagram, I'm a big fan of Secret London for fun and slightly out of the way things to do.

DH and I went there on our first date 😂

We went to see Crystal Palace at home. His friends couldn't believe it. 'First date and you took her to see PALACE?'

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 12/07/2023 21:31

Sky garden

3isthemagicnumberrr · 12/07/2023 23:03

Thank you! Lots of options. Boat down the Thames would remind me of our early dates, and Sky Garden is one of those great places we’ve not made it to yet.

Eating, drinking and exploring with something special (like a walking food tour, boat down the Thames, cocktails with a view etc) to make it stand out is what I’m imagining.

@Chelsea26 yes please! This looks like exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of!

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain Palace are our local team ;)

@AffIt yes please to restaurant tips in Covent Garden. I love the atmosphere but never know where to go.

Roger! Shall report back on Friday.

How this this go? I'm looking to plan a few things this year so interested in what you went for. We did one of the StreetHunt Games games last year which was a fun way to spend a kid-free day combined with food/drinks in town

City Hunt in London and York - StreetHunt Games

Unique City Hunt in London and York - think grown-up scavenger hunt meets escape room meets murder mystery, played outside.

Chelsea26 · 17/01/2024 22:32

@Lucymae85 It was ok, we had fun and the food was good but it was fairly simple for us because it was in soho and I know soho really well so I think it might be better to do it on a town/place you don’t know so well so it’s more of a challenge.

We’re going to try one of these this year

What else have you got planned?

The Mystery of The Bullingdon Burglar

The Mystery of Oxford's Bullingdon Burglar! Can you crack Oxford's most legendary unsolved crime?

If you want a BANGING dinner...

Hide (ground floor not fancy(er) first first floor) the basent cocktail bar is great too

Lucymae85 · 18/01/2024 15:04

Thanks for sharing - I haven't heard of those mystery guides so will check it out.

We're doing the second game that StreetHunt Games offer and are also keen to give Monopoly Lifesized a go but pretty expensive so need to save that for a special occasion!
