ppl using MH to excuse their behaviour

Yes Im (sort of) talking about Hew Edwards. Knew as soon as they said he had previous MH issues that he would blame it.
Now, I have terrible MH issues.. but it has never compelled me to chat to teenagers sexually online!
Im sick of ppl using it to excuse their behaviour as I feel it makes a mockery of ppl who have genuine MH issues...am I the only one?

I don't think they're using his poor MH as an excuse for his behaviour are they?

saraclara · 12/07/2023 19:06

He hasn't blamed his mental health for what he did. Neither has his wife. Read the statement properly, FFS.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 12/07/2023 19:07

Yes, didn't one of the young people say they felt under pressure to meet up (during lockdown)?

There are an awful lot of people with depression and the vast majority of them wouldn't put a young person in such a difficult position.

He's so much older, and arguably a trusted figure that I feel he's really abused his position- I don't think depression is an excuse. And blaming it on depression just further stigmatises the condition.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 12/07/2023 19:08

I think the "treated for depression for several years" is leading into using it to excuse his behaviour.

Sirzy · 12/07/2023 19:10

yet another very distasteful thread.

nothing is being used as an excuse. Whatever has happened he is ill enough to have been hospitalised - maybe just stop and think for a split second before posting!

I don't. I read it as him having history that means he's unlikely to have been able to manage the stress of the last few days.

He's not done anything illegal it turns out. How about we focus on the Tory MP who was arrested for rape back in May and still hasn't been named? And who continues to have his job.

QueenOfHiraeth · 12/07/2023 19:11

I think there are some people who blame lots of poor decisions and actions on MH but I'm not aware that anyone has blamed Huw Edward's bad judgement and behaviour on that.
His wife has said the events of the last few days have affected him badly to the point he has been hospitalised which, I suppose, is understandable for a man who has had serious breakdowns in the past.

I think a very big question that has to be answered now is that The Sun, knowing his history, claimed for days that legal offences were committed, which the Police say there is no evidence of.

OooIcouldCrushAGrape · 12/07/2023 19:11

Its a way to make ppl think poor Huw.
A lot of ppl do it. They will treat ppl bad etc and say I cant help it due to my MH. Or wont do stuff for ppl because they 'cant'.

It sounds like it's being used as the explanation as to why he is MIA - because he's in hospital.

It makes sense to explain why he's in hospital at the same time as saying "that's why he's not addressed the accusations yet" because if they don't say why, that will be the next mystery everyone will set about solving.

It made sense to say he is currently in hospital, and it made sense to say why.

And that's all that's been said on his behalf so far.

Oh give it up.

His wife and kids need a break and to be left alone. She made the statement she did, ad I don't see any excuse making in it.

This is a really tasteless OP and I hope MNHQ delete it as they did the similar one.

As a person who has struggled with mental health though moderately but has a brother who suffers severely and languishes without proper help, it seriously pisses me off.

Didn't Kevin Spacey check himself into a sex rehab clinic when his scandal erupted? As well insinuating that it was due to him being gay but repressed in the closet? As if multiple (alleged) acts of actual abuse were just down to having an addiction problem.

Scofield using CF to deflect from his behaviour made me sick

It seems being Gay and/or suffering mental health are the ultimate get out of free jail cards

Juanmartinez · 12/07/2023 19:24

Where does it say that they are blaming his actions on MH ?
He is in crisis at the moment but nowhere has anyone used MH as a reason for doing what he did.

So if you or DB were suffering a MH episode and were unable to deal with important life stuff, you'd rather none of your relatives held the fort for you until you were well enough to deal with things?

DysonSpheres · 12/07/2023 19:47

I wouldn't excuse my brother if he did the things (allegedly) reported. No.

This is why it works. People will bend over backwards to feel sorry for someone once they say they are suffering a MH breakdown. By the time the person is supposedly well enough to 'deal with things', the sympathy bucket will be so full it's a guaranteed pass.

Right, but we're not taking about excusing someone for things they allegedly did in HE's case, are we?

We're still at the stage where he's unavailable to address the allegations himself because he's having a MH issue and is in hospital.

He hasn't addressed the allegations and neither has his wife - she has simply issued a holding statement saying he's unavailable, and that's all we know.

If your DB was unable to manage his own affairs for a period and he had something important he was supposed to be doing during that time (e.g. a court appearance or an important work thing), surely someone in his life would tell the person expecting him to do it that he'd been taken into hospital? Wouldn't someone call in sick on his behalf, for example?

x2boys · 12/07/2023 19:59

Therre are different types of mental.illness and some can lead to.poor decision making
I'm not for one minute suggesting that this us what lead to.the alleged actions
Just that people cannot compare there mental state to anyone's else's .
