It's expensive, I know, but there's nothing can do about it.
DH always accepted it was a pain, but that how it was, but he also benefited from childcare on tap in holidays and my reasonable income.
Now he's gone and any friends or (casual) new men don't seem to be able to get their heads round the fact that if we're going away, even for a long weekend, it needs to be in the holidays.
I don't know what I'm supposed to do about it?

You can’t do anything about it….not if you are intending to keep working in education (I assume).
However it is also ok for people to go away at other times and not be prepared to only go away in school hols or pay additional when they could go at a cheaper time.
