Unalive....

Please can someone talk to me about the term "unalive"?

I honestly don't want any "snowflake""woke nonsense" comments. I can fill in those gaps myself. And yes, I can "do my own research". However, some people I trust online seem to be in favour of using it and some against. Can anyone help?

Using the word dead on some social media results in posts being deleted or posters being suspended.

Gingernaut · 12/07/2023 08:36

There are certain trigger words which are unacceptable on TikTok, YouTube and other SM sites; e.g. death, murder, kill

So regular posters, content providers and SM 'stars' find ways round the bans - sometimes to comic effect

Changeling78 · 12/07/2023 08:40

It’s just a word they use to get past the moderators. If you say “suicide” or “killed” then the mods will ban the post. Same for “sexual abuse” for which they say “S.A”.

YomAsalYomBasal · 12/07/2023 08:42

Yes it's to get around social media blocks. It's now creeping into every day language.

Topictwenty · 12/07/2023 08:42

What? So certain social media won’t let people say someone is dead, or been killed, or been murdered, or committed suicide?
Surely this is crazy, why are facts being erased?

CurlewKate · 12/07/2023 10:19

Thank you. There seems to be a suggestion that this particular censorship is only happening to some SM users. Specifically people of colour?

It came into being to get around social media censorship, but is now used outside of social media in a tongue in cheek way

Kedece2410 · 12/07/2023 10:33

I've only - thankfully - seen it on TT where as pp said anything referring to death murder or suicide is censored. Same as sex is referred to as seggs to get round the filters.

It's nothing to do with colour or race

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 12/07/2023 10:34

Never heard of it.

Jongleterre · 12/07/2023 10:38

I got a thirty day Facebook ban for saying 'I'd rather top myself than ....' in a humorous post.

They don't like references or jokes about murder, suicide etc but graphic porn and scammers are allowed on Facebook! 😂

CurlewKate · 12/07/2023 10:45

Hank Green was challenged on this and deleted a video he made objecting to "Unalive",saying he had been wrong.

I’ve been ‘put in Facebook jail’ for using the words suicide, killed, men, black, white, Indian and stabbed across various groups - three book groups and one local group. Different groups have different rules and different social media platforms have different rules so a lot of people are just cautious and use stuff like unalive and m3n on all platforms/groups to be safe. I’m really careful what I put in Facebook groups now because I can’t use it properly for a few days when I’m put in the naughty step.

Jongleterre · 12/07/2023 11:52

@Idontwannabe I once got a 7 day ban in a 'reminiscing about childhood' type of group and mentioned playing Cowboys and Indians as a child.

I also got a ban which I appealed and won for saying Sadiq Khan is a twat. I appealed saying I had seen similar content!😂
