Please help me with my front door decision! Need to sort today!

We currently have a white inside and out uPVC door which we're replacing with a composite one. It will be a anthracite outside but inside I want white but DH is insisting it will look stupid and wants it anthracite.

I'm thinking too dark in an already dark hallway and not sure how it will fit with the hallway decor which we haven't decided yet.

I need to make a decision today as the fitter needs to order the door. Please help me decide!

I have an anthracite door outside and white inside. The frame is the same. It looks good. I agree with the being too dark inside if it were also anthracite inside.

We have a really dark navy outside and white inside. I agree about not wanting to make a hallway dark, but also I wanted something neutral inside so I could paint the hallway any colour I liked without considering the door colour.

White inside.
Them you can decorate the hall how you want, not fixed by the grey of the front door.
Hopefully the door us going to last many tears, and you may want to decorate differently inside in that time.

White inside

White inside I'd choose.

Either white or anthracite would be fine inside. Any colour goes with both. Also anthracite is quite dramatic. Mirrors in the hall will help reflect light and brighten up the hallway and colourful pictures will look good against the dark door.

Not particularly helpful sorry, but if you lose this argument with your husband it's leverage for you to have the next casting vote.

I replaced mine last year. Navy outside (looks gorgeous) and white inside which keeps the porch feeling light and airy.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 12/07/2023 07:22

I had the same dilemma and initially was going to go with coloured inside as well as thought it would look daft beingbtwo colours. But went with white inside at the last minute as was worried if redecorating, etc it might not go, worried it would look odd inside being coloured. White has been fine, I’ve never thought it looks odd being a colour on one side and white on the other. White is nice and neutral and light.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 12/07/2023 07:23

The door guy said most people go white inside.

Incognito2023 · 12/07/2023 07:24

White - as hallway is dark

user1492757084 · 12/07/2023 07:26

White inside is brighter. If you really don't like it after a few years you can repaint a white door easily.

fungibletoken · 12/07/2023 07:26

We're also dark on the outside and white on the inside. As others have said, anthracite would make things very dark. Our hallway has no windows and is dark enough even with the white door.

Funny OP, I had this exact same decision to make - including the same colours!

I was all set for grey inside & out. Door supplier said white would be better due to light - and that most people did that. I was really unsure.

Went with great outside & white inside - so glad I did! Previous door was wooden frame with lots of glass panels. It was a rubbish door but did let in a lot of light! Even with the white door, my hall felt much darker for a while, but v happy with it now

Definitely white!

GoodChat · 12/07/2023 07:28

I agree with white inside

gillybombilly · 12/07/2023 07:29

It seems like I’m going against everyone here!

I chose a black door (half glass) both sides and the contrast against the light interior looks lovely, but I have a window in the hall also, so that does make a difference.

Go with your gut feeling - I’m sure you’ll love whatever you choose.

hollyblueivy · 12/07/2023 07:30

White inside

CheersToMe · 12/07/2023 07:33

I went for white inside, dark outside on a typical Victorian long narrow hallway. Happy with it.

Vettrianofan · 12/07/2023 07:34

Your DH is being a fanny - white inside.

That sounds lovely - but you chose half-glass and you've a window in your hall.

My door has side panels and cut our sections with glass but is still v solid, and my hall has light from other rooms that overall make the hall quite bright. But still a dark door in my average sized semi-D hallway would have been too dark.

Can completely see how it would work well in older houses with tall ceilings etc

Plastere · 12/07/2023 08:12

Thank you everyone! I've convinced him and the door guy also texted that it will look dark and he personally would go for white too
