Sushi. Eating or making, pretty but what a faff

Dee49 · 12/07/2023 20:25

Ribs or chicken wings. A lot of mess for very little actual meat

toxic44 · 12/07/2023 20:26

@Canidoitreally Tip a kilo pot of Greek-style full fat yoghurt into a muslin cloth, tie the corners and hang it up to drain overnight. I put mine on the cupboard handle with a bowl to catch the liquid. Next day, mix in 1tspn salt and hang overnight again. Then turn into a clean bowl, mix in spring onion, herbs and/or braised garlic to taste. Rest it 1 hr in the fridge. That's it.
Or omit the herbs/garlic, add eggs, lemon and sugar and use it as a base for cheesecake. Keeps 4-5 days in fridge. Try it with 500g first if you like.

capermum · 12/07/2023 20:30

Yum ! Can you post the recipe?!

Spaghetti. Chicken wings. King prawns you have to peel
Yourself. Ribs.

I can never understand why unpeeled king prawns are ever served in a sauce. You just end up with sauce all over your fingers.

Making your own lasagne. So labour intensive.

I do this because so many lasagne ready meals have truly awful high fat white sauce, tastes as though it's made with lard and dried milk.

Pomegranate

If you break it apart in a bowl of water, the seeds sink and pith floats- but you still need to pick off every, single, bit of pith anyway!

And when you've done it they're all pippy anyway, though they do look lovely.

Beamur · 11/07/2023 11:41

Roast dinner. Better in the pub. Unless the potatoes are disappointing.

Crazy 😆 you're not going to the right houses for roast
I've only had one pub one that came anywhere close, and even that isn't worth it was there's no seconds.

Also had an amazing one on a farm, but most pub ones aren't worth the money.

Oh god yes, risotto. I love it, but the stirring. I have looked at buying one of those pans with a stirring arm.
Fresh pasta, sourdough bread. My husband bought me a sourdough course... so much faff.

I've got one of those Sage risotto machines, got it second hand on Ebay and it works quite well, though which rice you buy makes a big difference.

Ohitsajollyholiday · 11/07/2023 12:53

Most of those mentioned already, though I quite enjoy making and eating risotto.

I can’t stand making pancakes and waffles - such a faff, takes forever to serve everyone and really unsociable cooking one or two at a time 😓

I make waffles all my family love them. If you make a big batch beforehand you can reheat them in the toaster, do the toppings whilst the next one is heating.

pollymere · 12/07/2023 21:10

Controversial maybe but Sweet and Sour sauce. By the time you've bought the fifteen ingredients which seems to include pineapple juice and ketchup you could buy the really lovely one from Sainsbury's with extra pineapple for about a pound and no effort.

RavenhairedRachel · 12/07/2023 21:11

Pineapples and pomegranates far too much effort

I always think oranges (big ones not satsumas) aren't worth the effort so rarely buy them, but when I do have one I wonder why I don't buy them more often.

Just slice in half. Put the cut side down, slice into wee crescents. Super easy to eat.

Snugglemonkey · 12/07/2023 21:19

hexsnidgett · 11/07/2023 11:49

Lasagne is totally worth it, I have never had a bought one that was as good as mine.
I made crumpets once, really not worth it.

I only eat my own. I make two at a time and have a batch of mince for spag bol too for my efforts. Definitely worth it!

I make pancakes most mornings. I just keep them warm and serve a big stack for everyone to peel off the number they want from.

RunningUpThatMill · 12/07/2023 21:55

I made tempura vegetables and I will never, ever do it again. The batter creates a right mess, and the dish was shit. Maybe I'm a sloppy and rubbish cook, but I was so disappointed.

RunningUpThatMill · 12/07/2023 21:55

Oh and to the first poster. Good shout on big oranges.

Tlolljs · 11/07/2023 12:03

Where can you buy a decent fish pie from please?
All the ones I’ve had are too runny and not enough fish.

M&S Gastro pub one, it’s about £10 but a really big portion for 2 people

DogbertMcDogglesworth · 12/07/2023 22:18

Cannelloni. Filling the tubes a teaspoon at a time!
I make it once a year if I can summons the willpower.

Folklore9074 · 12/07/2023 22:22

BarrelOfOtters · 11/07/2023 08:22

Yes, oranges, had some sliced oranges in a restaurant on holiday as an afters, free on the house sort of thing. Just delicious and easy….

look at them in the supermarket and think I can’t be arsed.

Wow. I almost admire the level to which you can not be arsed. It's just an orange!!!

Mammajay · 12/07/2023 22:28

Tesco finest fish pie is good as is Charlie Bigham's..my husband is fan

Keykat · 12/07/2023 22:29

About the canneloni, would using a piping bag work to fill them or a funnel!

I might try it sometime in the distant future, but probably couldn't be bothered.

WideFootWelly · 12/07/2023 22:34

Tanith · 11/07/2023 14:37

How to Peel an Orange:
Cut in half, from top to bottom.
Cut each half in half again (so you have 4 quarters).
Now peel each quarter, from one end to the other - it's much easier.

Pomegranates:
Cut in half.
Turn half upside down over a bowl and bash hard on the back with something solid like a knife handle.
Seeds should all fall out in the bowl.

Risotto:
Who on earth adds a ladle at a time when no-one's looking?? Grin

Globe Artichoke - yeah, OK - I'll give you that one. You have to be seriously mad on the taste to mess about with them, and I'm not!
Ditto Mango, though I understand the Australians have it down to a fine art.

Ah...the mangoes in Australia do not taste the same as the UK. They are absolutely worth the effort.

I don't think I like the ones we get here. I wonder if we can get the yellow ones.

WelshDaffodil · 12/07/2023 22:38

That trifle for the Platinum Jubilee. Two days it took Hmm

Maternityleavelady · 12/07/2023 22:46

Hiphopopotamus · 11/07/2023 11:40

Risotto! All that careful ladling of stock bit by bit for hours just to end up with some ok flavoured rice

I do oven baked risottos these days to save the faff. Delia has some good recipes.
