I loved my Caran d’ache pencils. Beautiful tins and great colours. I can’t be alone remembering them fondly

Ha! I knew from just your thread title it'd be good old Caran D'Ache!

Loved them. Art-obsessed 10-year-old me was given a tin of 40 for Christmas, and no present in the decades since has ever quite engendered so much joy.

Mine were the aquarelle water-soluble pencils. Brilliantly realistic bruises could be created by clever blending of the purples/greens/yellows on my knees, I discovered!

I've just looked them up and 40 now cost £108. Blimey 😮

I did have some caran dache! Not just pencils, but also pastels (both dry and waxy!)

They were quite expensive though, so obviously they werent mine! My stepdad would take up a new hobby every other week (or so it seemed) and art was one of them, so he had a big tin of the aquarelle ones, and the pastels as well.

I did have art classes in school, and really enjoyed them, so I used them more than he ever did!!

marshmallowfinder · 11/07/2023 01:57

Yep! I had those exact ones! Loved them.

Netaporter · 11/07/2023 04:24

Yep. Found my Caran D’Ache about 12 years ago. I’d lovingly looked after them and used them sparingly. Gave them to DD who promptly lost the black pencil. I still haven’t forgiven her tbh 😂

PurplePeach62 · 11/07/2023 06:12

Yes I've still got mine, smaller tin than yours though!
I come across them every so often when I'm having a tidy up, admire the tin then put them back in whichever cupboard I found them. Wouldn't part with them though, they're part of my growing up!

Sunnysidegold · 11/07/2023 08:06

Oh my friend who did art GCSE had a really big tin of these and would let me use them in geography. They were so lovely to use!

Like another pp I looked them up recently thinking they'd be a great gift for my art mad neice - soooo expensive!!

fussychica · 11/07/2023 08:47

DH has that exact tin. Many, many years old.

Chatillon · 11/07/2023 08:53

Still got mine. Large long tin (never used) and some smaller ones. Why are people talking in past tense? Have they gone out of business?

I also had lots of these and they were worth having for the impressive labels alone. Sadly I last used these in 1987.

My DD was always keen on art growing up, and was often given nice pencils as birthday/Christmas presents. Lots of duplicate colours so over the years she built up a little collection stored carefully away.

Now she's at art school for uni, and was incredibly pleased to re-discover the stash as they do indeed cost a small fortune!

Madlymumming · 11/07/2023 10:07

My mum had a tin. They were closely guarded and only shared under strict supervision😋

Notajollyholly · 11/07/2023 10:18

I bought some a few years back, I wanted more colours and ended up researching and bought mondeluz koh I noor and found them as good. They weren't cheap but I gave my carandache ones to a friend .

TokyoSushi · 11/07/2023 10:24

Oh yes they were beautiful, I treasured mine, I think I got them from WH Smith (back when WH Smith was actually good!)

CosyCoffee · 11/07/2023 10:29

I didn't, but I did have a tin of these for the Moscow olympics in 1980

Did you have these pencils?
dearJayne · 11/07/2023 11:14

Yo got these for my birthday one year. I absolutely loved them.

WithIcePlease · 11/07/2023 11:21

I had that set too
Also bought for each of DC

WellThisIsFun1 · 11/07/2023 15:57

They were objects of desire in my primary school.

I remember being all made up when I got a set for Christmas 1983

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 11/07/2023 16:15

I still have my childhood Caran d’Ache. Judging by the sticker on the tin, I wasn’t sharing!

I've got the same ones. I scratched by name on the back with a compass. Was using them recently but sadly the black has gone. I've had them at least 40 years so doing well.
