Do your work surroundings matter?

This is a bit of an odd one and I'm probably not wording it very well.

I've always worked in a very corporate world, high end beautiful offices, huge entertaining budgets, yoga at lunch time type of place, lots of staff perks etc I do like that side of it but I'm bored, so bored in my actual role.

I've been offered a new opportunity, completely different, I think it could lead to good things, I will learn lots and will be a great career move. It's in an industrial setting, 99% male. Being blunt it's all a bit grotty and dirty. Couldn't be more different.

Does it matter, will I struggle with the massive change? I feel shallow for even thinking about it.

I worked in a new, purpose built office. Nothing fancy at all but it had big windows, air-con, plenty meeting spaces and open plan offices.

My team were moved to a new office site. It has triple height ceilings with very small windows at the top that provide little ventilation or natural light, small, cramped offices where we're all staring at a partition. It feels dark and oppressive and I wish we could go back to our old office as I felt far more motivated there.

So although I wouldn't need the yoga etc... I think having access to basic things like natural light and a decent office defo matters!

I'd do it! 30% more is a LOT.

Make your office space nice, build up relationships with the guys, go for walks on your lunch and listen to fun podcasts on your commute

i work in local government a d a 70’s building which hasn’t changed in 45 years! Still has the in/out boards in the corridor and green/red lights for showing vacant/busy rooms.

paper and boxes everywhere, grotty kitchen, peeling paint on the walls and coffee stains on the walls where some one tripped coming from the kitchen

but i love it! Id hate a clear desk policy and everything on computer.
