How long do you have your hot water on for each day?

We've got a 300l tank which might be relevant.

We've just got a nest and have been experimenting with duration of hot water. We had it on 4 hour a day (2 x2 morning and evening) and I reduced it to 2 x 1 with no impact. I just had a shower then bath using the morning's hot as the evening hour is on at 6pm (dying my hair) and it is as hot as ever.

I'm considering reducing to 30 mins each time.

5 of us here, and we don't want a cold wash!

Sounds like a trial and error job. Try reducing the time and seeing how much hot water you can get. I have it on 1 hr in the night but I live on my own and get a shower daily and one lot of washing up (lots of salads at the moment as am on a diet), so no greasy pots and pans to clean.

Family of 5 here but our shower is electric. DH only has baths so uses quite a lot but DC and I usually shower. It's on for 30 minutes in the morning and I think an hour early evening. I'll very occasionally put it on for a bit extra but generally that's enough.

Quite a big tank, but 2 of us on electric showers, 2 on water tank. An hour a day, and thinking of reducing it further.

We have an electric shower. I’ve turned the immersion heater off and it only goes on for two hours when we need a bath and that’s enough for a full bath.

TreesandFish · 08/07/2023 18:26

I'm in my own. I have it on 45 minutes per day

Wouldn't doing your own testing be more helpful than randomers answers?

I have a combi. A long shower costs me about 20p in summer, 40 to 50p in winter.

Remember the ambient temperature of the cold water supply is higher in the summer - plus your bath/shower is comfortable at a lower temp and the preheated water will take longer to cool down. You may find that what works in summer is not enough when the weather is colder.

5 of us and it comes on for 1hr in the morning and 1hr in the evening. Occasionally I have to boost it if the children have all had baths and I've had a long shower. Usually thats on a Sunday!

Large tank.
It is in for an hour each morning.
Two of us having a shower each morning, as the water goes off.

If dd is home than it tends to go on for an extra half hour.

If I want a bath, etc after work (more likely in winter) I put it in for 30 minutes beforehand

Niftyswiftie · 08/07/2023 18:58

Mine is on for an hour every evening. There are 4 of us in this home, water is never cold.

fizzyfood · 08/07/2023 19:14

One hour a day for 4 of us, one person showers every day other three shower every other day. No pot washing as we have a dishwasher. No electric shower, all heated water is from the tank.
