Jeremy Vine is threatening to sue

Just read on Twitter that Jeremy Vine has screenshotted a tweet accusing him of 'underage sex' and is threatening to sue the poster.

I know MN keeps taking these threads down, quite sensibly, but do be careful of naming anyone on SM in relation to these allegations, it wasn't even a tweeter with a particularly large following. I don't want to link to it.

Is it point scoring between BBC and ITV, with BBC trying to look holier than thou now by being as "transparent" as they can be with their investigation by showing the world they've acted quickly?

It seems nobody knows how to handle sexual abuse and grooming allegations. 2023, got to despair.

They've just announced it on the news and had quite a segment about it. I find it incredible. Theres no police investigation, theres not a lot of communication from the family to the BBC by the sounds of it

Seems to me they're trying to fall over themselves to show they're doing 'the right thing' to the extent that its become a farce.

Either someones done something wrong and they need to be sacked or disciplined (or police intervention) and there is evidence of that, or there isnt and stop all the hand wringing.

I am not sure there can be sacking or disciplining without an investigation. It looks like there is not a police investigation because it is not a crime. Therefore the teen must have been legally of age to be able to send pics (18). So this is unsavoury, but not illegal.

All this has distracted nicely from George Osborne’s wedding, and that email, hasn’t it? Interesting timing by his friends in the press.

Well thats sort of my point, either there is enough information to investigate (which given the implication that the family havent corresponded with them is going to be difficult), or there is a police investigation both of which could lead to suspension or whatever,,,, OR there isnt any of that and the BBC should not have started this vague witch hunt by proxy.

According to the information given it would be a crime though, the young person is said to have been under 18 when the pictures started although as you say if it was 18 then it may be unsavoury but not illegal.

He was 17 at the time, so technically illegal. The police are now investigating

Was he 17 when they started chatting or when the pics were sent though. There is so much we do not know that it is pointless speculating until there is actual information.

I'll be interested to know what happens with the police. We have countless situations at work where we report exactly the same situation to police, 17 year olds who we believe are being exploited, they are groomed into sending indecent images of themselves to someone and its always NFA

Obviously there are not 1000s of pounds involved, and sometimes the other person is their so called 'boyfriend' (usually much older), the grooming tends to involve cheap clothing, fags, some drugs etc rather than the amounts talked about here.

Is it always possible to trace twitter users?
I don’t blame Jeremy Vine in the least for wanting to clear his name, but if the tweeter lives abroad or is tech savvy, can they be found?

No idea. If they’ve been daft enough to use their real details for either their Twitter account or email account then yes. But if they’ve given false details everywhere then I guess it’s harder. Maybe they can track via IP addresses?

We have the same problem with 15yos. Really hard to get anyone to do anything.

Yes I should have clarified Im not talking only 17 year olds, this happens to teens of all ages and are reported and NFA nearly every time. Sometimes the accused might be spoken to but not much else.

It’s a good reminder that you shouldn’t just post/ tweet whatever

Think before you post.
That is good advice for many people

Really?

What evidence have you got for that statement?

Absolutely none. Just anecdotal from reading round the internet on various sites.

DisquietintheRanks · 09/07/2023 09:42

@Zebedee55 yes the mother is talking to the press. But who is the victim talking to? Does the victim want to involve the press or the police?

Same.

My arms are strong 💪 I defend my right to free speech.

Although I do need to pointlessly rock up to my next AA meeting - they know I'm good.

Surely not!
