Banaz Mahmod - Honour Killing

Did anyone watch the TV series about Banaz Mahmod, the woman who was raped, tortured and murdered, an honour killing arranged by her own father. I have thought about her a lot since and the women who have also been victims of honour killings. I can’t help but feel she was so let down, she went to the police numerous times fearing for her life and there was no one to help her anywhere, not even her own flesh and blood.
It’s just so sad and horrific!

I agree. Honour killing is a ridiculous name for murder.

What tv series was this? How awfully sad, poor woman.

I hate the term honour killing. Not focusing that on you Op. I realise it’s a generally accept term.

I haven’t seen this, but from your description it was torture, rape and murder. That’s what it is and that’s what it should be labelled as.

I don’t understand how anyone could arrange to do that to anyone, never mind their own daughter. I don’t understand how someone could take part in this sort of thing.

It makes me sick that the Female police officer who didn’t believe her and called her manipulative, got minimal discipline and went on to be promoted.

How hateful people who do this atrocities must be to do this to your own daughter.

I haven't heard of the case or poor victim so don't want to derail the thread about her but I agree that language is important and that such cases should not be referred to as honour killings by the press or police. That's exactly how the perpetrators justify it, honour. It is murder, intimidation, rape, and male subjugation of women. Maybe familial murder would be better or something like that.

The PPs mentioning the term honour killing are spot on. There is no honour in it. I’m outside the UK, was this in the UK? Then the press need to call it what it legally was. A brutal rape and murder.

i suppose the press still like honour killing as it tries to attach meaning to something which has none. It also then makes it obvious which section of the community they’re talking about.

IIRC it was arranged by her father. One of the men who raped her and killed her was her own uncle. Where is the honour in this?

AtlasPine · 09/07/2023 07:30

It’s like the term ‘child porn’ instead of images of child sexual abuse. Language does matter.

Not blaming op by the way - honour killing is how it is presented.
