Limit of 10k and making purchase of 20k. Can I load up card with 10k and then pay? Going to pay whole balance off just want credit card protection and points.

With my credit card you can't exceed the credit limit at all, regardless of if you're "loading it up" with funds beforehand. Points obviously are an issue but paying a deposit on a credit card covers the entire amount, even if the remainder is paid via a different method.

You could ask them nicely to raise the limit for you.

Have you checked with whoever you’re buying the item from (car?) whether they’ll take the whole balance from a CC? Many won’t, because of the fees, but when I’ve tried in the past, they’ll take an agreed amount.

This is also a good point. I used to work for a garage and our limit was £1000 on a credit card because of the fees and the ruling that we couldn't pass those fees onto the consumer.

Speak to your provider. They might not like what you are doing and cancel your card (I'm thinking of money laundering/fraud - banks are getting very kneejerky atm).

If you spend above 10k per year most credit card companies will consider a temporary limit extension. My credit card company does this. Alternatively take out a loan - you still get protection under the consumer credit act.

MissKittyCat · 06/07/2023 22:01

You get the Section 75 protection for the whole value of the item even if you only pay for part of it with a credit card.

UrsulaIsMyQueen · 06/07/2023 22:02

No you can’t, this would trigger AML checks.

As long as you put at least £1 of your purchase on your card you are covered. If it's a car you're buying I'd out the initial deposit on it then pay the final balance through debit card.
