Dog vs Velcro tent

Moltenpink · 06/07/2023 17:52

Can anyone think of a practical solution for our camping holiday? One very strong Labrador, the front of our tent zips around the door but only down the side. The bottom is Velcro and he can push his way out. Any ideas to keep him inside at night?

Cage?

70sTomboy · 06/07/2023 17:54

Does it have built-in groundsheet, if not dog tether that screws into the ground.

Crate or tether.

Mine go in a folding crate at night. It takes up very little extra space but stops them dicking about at night and also means there is somewhere to put them while we go to the shower block or whatever

Mine has a tether that screws into the ground and wears her harness continually when we are camping... does the job ( tether is outside the tent door) :)

Thanks, I could try the tether outside, that could work. I don’t think we can fit a cage in the car but could try.

We have a good living area in our tent, so dog is tethered (only for short periods) The tether is a screwy thing that screws into the ground with a triangle on the top. A swivel loop attaches the lead to the triangle. We modified ddogs harness, as another swivel loop attaches to harness D.ring. Tether line attached to harness swivel loop. The swivelled loops enable Ddog to move freely without getting caught up...at night she has her own camp bed next to dd, so sleeps in the sleep pod with dd....sometimes she sneaks on to DD's bed, and tries to edge dd off her bed!

On behalf of every other camper on the site, please don't tether your dog outside your tent overnight...

You need a better tent, collapsible crate or a bigger car. Or put the dog in kennels as the equipment you have is neither safe or humane for the dog (or for your fellow campers)

StillMedusa · 07/07/2023 10:24

My dog isn't tethered outside the tent...just the screw in bit... she sleeps in the pod with me, zipped in :) We camp every year in a rally field with the same group of people and the tether is purely in case of emergency. I'd never leave my dog outside the tent...but neither would I cage her. She doesn't leave my side at night and never has.

averythinline · 07/07/2023 10:31

crates are foldable... i put ours on the floor of the boot with layers of blankets and dog bed on top and that's what the dog travels on!
also take crate cover which blocks some of the early morning light too!....so much for downsizing camping gear!

@Loverofoxbowlakes surely OP meant put the tether outside but the lead and the dog inside the tent, as she can't put the tether through the ground sheet. Nobody would actually go camping and leave the dog outside the tent all night

If the dog is the type to leave the tent, there's nothing to stop him getting out in the night.

Vitriolinsanity · 07/07/2023 18:53

Mine would be in the sleeping bag going nowhere.

SinnerBoy · 07/07/2023 19:13

Our Lab goes in the boot, we have an estate car. I leave windows open and have a device to keep the boot unlocked and cracked open. I also make sure to get up by sunrise.

The first time we had her in the tent, she forced her way out twice and as there was livestock, I had to put her in the car.

You'd think not wouldn't you...

Sadly I've been camping a lot and seen/hear so many dogs going AWOL as they've not been secured overnight. Woke up to one trying to get in ours one morning.

When we took our husky she stayed on a line into the ground fed via electric cable site into the tent. Ds slept in the lounge area with a husky for a blanket...

magicstar1 · 13/07/2023 14:42

On our first night camping our GSD managed to get out of the zipped tent and we only found out when she barked to be let back in!
I kept her lead on with the other end tied to my wrist after that.
Now she sleeps inside the internal part with us and she can’t get out at all.
