The Stand by Stephen King - WITH spoilers but ONLY up to where I’m reading 🤣🤣

I downloaded the book after recommendations here and I’ve got 8 hours left (out of 48!!!) to listen to.

It’s amazing but I can’t stand the emotional rollercoaster! I’ve just got to the part where that Julie girl recognises Tom Cullen in Vegas. If anything happens to Tom I might actually cry, I still can’t believe Nick and Mother Abigail died!
I am SO close to googling what happens to Tom but I wont.

Awful Harold and Nadine are on the way West, and so are the 4 from the committee (without Fran thank goodness).

I’m quite glad that there won’t be any committee meetings for a while, they were a bit too much like being at an actual committee meeting.

Anyway I just had to talk about it 🤣

Is the audiobook any good? Have you got the uncut version? I'm so jealous of anyone reading it for the first time, I won't spoil it for you but...
...it gets better.

Taq · 06/07/2023 13:54

It’s the uncut audiobook and it’s amazing, the voice actor is really good. If I was reading this in an actual book I’d be skimming it now to fly through and find out what happens, and probably missing loads, so it’s quite good really!

I just hope it’s not one of those horrible endings where the baddies win. But no please don’t spoil it! I’m going to have another hour now whilst I do the washing!

One of my favourite books.
I re-read it when Covid hit 😆

Enjoy OP.

tonyhawks23 · 06/07/2023 14:14

It's not a film it's like an epic series,I think both maybe 6 hours long, the old one was a double video set back when I was a teenager!youl find it online somwhere and the new one is good too and nice to compare the two,I think that's in amazon prime, but watch the old one first!I loved Larry!
And your v impressive not to have googled the ending!

Taq · 06/07/2023 15:55

Nadine has just met Randall Flagg and it’s not gone well for her 😱

And Tom has just left Vegas….please make it home Tom!!

This is my favourite book of all time! 😃 It might just be time for a re-read but I need to get an uncut edition for my Kindle. I have an old uncut book version from the early 1990s

Farmageddon · 06/07/2023 16:01

Love love love this book - I read it several times as a teenager. Used to call it my bible (coz it's so big, and the battle between good vs. evil).

I wouldn't get your hopes up about the tv series though, I found most of the characters didn't match up to the book versions. Except maybe Stu Redmond.

Anyway, enjoy - I must read it again soon. It's one book that can very accurately be described as 'epic'.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 06/07/2023 16:02

It's an absolute epic of a book to be fair - one of King's best. There's also an associated short story called Night Surf in his short story collections.

King keeps you emotionally invested until pretty much the end of the book, it's a bit of a rollercoaster but worth riding.

Farmageddon · 06/07/2023 16:03

Also, it is one of the few Stephen King books where the ending doesn't disappoint (the same can't be said for IT...)

I read it when it first came out, more decades ago than I care to remember and while I can't remember all the details I vividly remember a major gear change in the story

tonyhawks23 · 06/07/2023 16:07

The thing I liked about both of the series was the fabulous comparisons between both and between book, they are all fabulous in their own way.id like a whole book club style evening debating them!

NoShitHemlock · 06/07/2023 17:26

M.O.O.N that spells moon! We still use that phrase in our house 20years later 😁

This is am amazing book and the series with Rob Lowe and Gary Sinise is really faithful to it.

I am very jealous that you get to read it for the first time!

titbumwillypoo · 06/07/2023 18:04

It's my go to comfort read (along with the Dark Tower series) But I've struggled with the style of the new mini series because the actors don't match the people in my head and Whoopie Goldberg, though wonderful isn't old enough and Owen Teague doesn't cut it as Harold for me.

LividHot · 06/07/2023 18:06

Ah mate.

Get listening.

It’s my joint fave book (with IT) though I haven’t reread it for years.

WhoWants2Know · 06/07/2023 18:08

Glen Bateman is my favourite character.

I did this too! It's such a great book!

OP would recommend Desperation next, its got a similar 'feel' to The Stand although not an 'epic' as such.

MamaDollyorJesus · 06/07/2023 18:12

OP I remember the bit that you're at so know how you're feeling about Tom - I was on tenterhooks for days desperate to find out what happened but terrified I wouldn't like it when I did!

I loved the actual book as a teen & listened to the audiobook a couple of years ago.

Have seen both series too & they are great but Stephen King was a producer of the first one & his son was a producer on the most recent so that's likely why they're very true to the book.

The opening sequence of the 1994 tv version still gives me chills.

I read the book when it was first published and still have my 40-something year old paperback.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 06/07/2023 18:14

Why is Amazon prime trying to charge me to watch the series when I have Prime? very frustrating lol

The casting for the original 6 hour 'movie' was so good so I'm a little worried they aren't going to match that but I'm still excited this finally got made!

MsNorris · 06/07/2023 18:15

One of my favourite books, I recall watching the original film (many times) and thinking Whoopi Goldberg would make a great Mother Abigail and then 20 years later they made the TV series with exactly that.

The first film is epic - Rob Lowe, Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald. But I also enjoyed the new tv series and James Marsden did a brilliant Stu and the judge gender swap was interesting. I also liked that they did a bit extra with 2 of the characters so you know what happened to them - I always wondered. I won’t say who to avoid spoilers

Being on Amazon prime doesn't mean it's necessarily free, there's loads you have to pay for

It wasn't on actual Amazon prime when I watched it, it was on one of their add-on subscriptions. I paid for a month, watched it then cancelled the subscription.

Read it and watched it many years ago but have just bought the audiobook thanks to this thread. The narrator’s voice is perfect - thank you @Taq!
