Would you pay to upgrade your hotel room or hope for a freebie ?

Staying in a nice hotel Sunday
I've booked a standard room
When i have checked every other room/suite is still available
They sent me a link with upgrade options
The cheapest is a room with a view for £25 more and a junior suite is £70 more

Would you pay it or wait and take your chances of possibly getting a free upgrade ?
When I have checked reviews a lot are talking about complimentary upgrades etc

Depends how bothered you would be by staying in the standard room.

hollyblueivy · 06/07/2023 07:09

Pay

lretty · 06/07/2023 07:09

Well this is my partners argument
Who cares about a view? You won't be standing looking out the window
And why do you need a junior suite when you will lie in bed and not use sofa etc

Weonce paid extra for a large outside terrace as we were taking the
dog (France), we barely used it. Total waste of money.

I want the luxury of more space and I am a sucker for a decent view on the one week escape from reality after working hard all year long - especially at £70 cost

Mumdiva99 · 06/07/2023 07:51

I would pay if I wanted it. If I didn't care I wouldn't spend the money.

For 1 night I provably wouldn't pay. For a week I would - as it would have more impact.

Phos · 06/07/2023 07:56

I wouldn’t bother for one night.

WonderingWhale · 06/07/2023 08:01

I wouldn't bother paying for one night as you won't be spending that much time in the room. If there's loads of availability you can always upgrade when you get there if they don't upgrade you for free.

So why do YOU think it matters?

catonalamppost · 06/07/2023 08:04

I've never had a free room upgrade at a hotel. I don't understand - do you ask for it when you arrive or do they just give it to you? We must be staying in very different hotels if so!

I would pay in advance if I cared about it.

OhDoh · 06/07/2023 08:06

Sunday nights aren't usually that busy in most hotels. They tend to upgrade as standard rooms are sold out to free up the standards as they tend to be the ones that sell easier. Try your luck with the desk when you arrive but I would expect to pay. If you are going for a birthday or anniversary always good to mention as they might upgrade.

Letsnotargue · 06/07/2023 08:09

Does the hotel have a ‘members’ card? If so, sign up for that. I’ve had upgrades for being a member even when I only
signed up to get a cheaper room rate.

For a week overlooking the sea I would upgrade. For one night I probably wouldn’t. I’ve been upgraded to a suite before for one night and while it was quite novel, all I needed was the bathroom and the bed and I’d have got that in a standard room.

Niceseasidetown · 06/07/2023 08:11

I think you're unlikely to get an upgrade for the full week as they may get last minute bookings.

But you might!

Upgrades are generally worth it...more space and better views can really help you relax.

£70 seems reasonable

I've had a lot of upgrades but only for very short stays....

lretty · 06/07/2023 08:18

Yeah we are only staying for the one night

Is it just one night? I’d pay if I wanted it and wouldn’t if I didn’t care. We upgraded on our last holiday, some of the rooms had swim up pools but when we booked none were available. When we went to check in they offered one to us due to a cancellation, it was the same price as if we’d booked it in advance so there was no financial advantage to getting one later on. Was about £300 for the week and it was hardly used but I don’t regret it for the times we did use it - it’s always a bit of a gamble!
