On the verge of making a daft decision

It's not one I could ever justify for any logical reason, just that it's fun and I want to. But will it be enough fun for me not to regret it?

I'm thinking of spending £30k on a two seater convertible.

I don't need a car. I have a 2yo Ford Focus that does about 6000 miles pa and I've just changed my job so it will be even less. When I do use the car it's for socialising, usually travelling a hundred miles or so for sports events, although even then we often car share so I don't always drive. Short local trips at weekends.

I can afford it. I'll pay cash, I won't miss the money as such, it's just in savings, it won't make any difference to what else I do or what i can soend on a daily/monthly/annual basis. I have good pensions so don't need it to boost that.

I'll probably have to keep the Focus for when I need a sensible car - there's just me so this isn't a second car.

I feel like throwing caution to the wind, which is most unlike me, you don't build savings like that, but it is a lot of money for something that won't get a lot of use. It is all money I've earned and saved, no windfalls.

I bought microwaveable carrots and they were utterly shit. Cost me £1.15. Not everything we want is great bit we don't know it until we part with the money. You may enjoy the car - who knows

LadyJ2023 · 05/07/2023 18:00

You haven't exactly given a decent list of positives as to how it would enhance your life. But hey if it makes you haply for a few days

I used to have a two seater convertible. After a while I felt ridiculous driving around in it.

MIBnightmare · 05/07/2023 18:01

If you enjoy driving DO IT !!

Mine was considerably less but makes me smile everyday and when the sunshine's and the roof is down it is complete unadulterated, bliss .. I also live in the country side so can also enjoy not just the car but the surroundings.

Plenty of things people spend money on because they simply enjoy it. I would do the same again in a heartbeat. It's been 4 years and just enjoy it more and more. I call it my 'midlife crisis' ..

Eyesopenwideawake · 05/07/2023 18:02

Hire one for a week and see if you still feel the same.

unlikelychump · 05/07/2023 18:02

Sell the boring one for sure. Hire a boring one if you need it

Then I would.

I had a convertible once before I had kids. It was great fun.

Toffeesgirl · 05/07/2023 18:02

Can you hire one for a week/month? See if you actually love it or not and then buy one if you do.

MIBnightmare · 05/07/2023 18:04

I love mine so much that I am saving up for another one once I reach 70k miles .. what are you looking at OP ? Mine is a humble MX5 roadster .. dm if too outing !

UndercoverCop · 05/07/2023 18:06

MIL had one of these , had to give it up after the speeding fine/points before the one that would've lost her her licence...
It was also perilous in anything other than warm dry conditions

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 05/07/2023 18:10

I have a two seater convertible.

Bet you can't guess what it is.

I love driving it - I think you should throw caution to the wind.

Seems a bit odd considering you drive so few miles per year.

massiveclamps · 05/07/2023 18:24

Two things.

1 - you're an idiot, don't do it.
2 - Yesss!!! You only live once!!!

Will this car appreciate in value, have you got somewhere dry and secure to keep it and the knowledge to maintain it properly, and will you regret it if you don't? If the answer is yes, then choose no 2. If not, like I said, you're an idiot.

It's not an old classic, I don't think it needs any more care or knowledge than my current car?

We bought a supercar a few years ago. It was 'ok' lol. Depreciated madly in the year we had it. In the end I didn't enjoy driving it. Bought a cheaper car through auction next and it was the best car I've ever had and I miss it unhealthily 😂

Not many cars do appreciate in value, and why does she need
more knowledge to maintain it properly, than her previous one?

OP - you can afford it, and you want it - go for it.

Grownyourownway · 05/07/2023 18:31

Between dh and I we’ve owned approx 60 cars, amongst all those cars we have only owned one two seater convertible and hated it, would never have another but go for it, you’ll never know if you will enjoy owning one if you don’t go for it.

It's not really any different to buying fancy shoes you only wear for special occasions or the holiday of a lifetime that only lasts a few days?

OP posts:
CrazyArmadilloLady · 05/07/2023 18:39

I was about to ask - if you car share on longer trips, how would you take your turn with a two-seater? But as you’re keeping your other car, it’s not an issue.

F0XCUB · 05/07/2023 18:39

Do it! If I had the money I'd get a motorbike. Sadly I do not have the money

OldTinHat · 05/07/2023 18:39

I swore black and blue that when my DC left home I'd buy a two seater sports car. A seat for me and a seat for my handbag!

You've just reminded me of that promise to myself and they left five years ago...!

Buy the car!!!

F0XCUB · 05/07/2023 18:40

If you decide not to, please give me the money for my motorbike. Thank you

emmetgirl · 05/07/2023 18:41

I have a convertible and I LOVE IT!! It's the 3rd one I've had.
Just DO IT!!

menope · 05/07/2023 18:42

Convertibles are complexly overrated, I don't like them in warm countries let alone this one! I'd go travelling if I felt impulsive.
