To those that are Grade 7 or above, how long did it take you to reach that and what was your career path like?

I have just started a SEO role. However I also have an offer for HMRC’s Tax Specialist Programme (TSP) 2023, where I would become a Grade 7 in 3 years.

I have weeks to make the decision as to which role to take long term. I am leaning towards staying in my current job as a SEO. Is it realistic to want to reach G7 in the same 3 year timescale? I feel like I would have more flexibility in my career vs TSP and different roles available, although tax roles can be quite lucrative it’s not my dream job.

What did you decide?

Hi Op,

Just came across this thread. I would only recommend moving if the other SEO gives you more experience so you can demonstrate examples for your personal statement and competencies.

I started in the CS as an EO then after 18 months got my HEO. Then I progressed to an SEO within 10 months. Had a role change inbetween and got my G7 within 18 months. I got promoted to a G6 3 and a half years later but did various G7 roles to build my experience

Why have you replied to a thread from 2023? Do you not think the OP has decided which job to take by now, some 18 months later?

@ProbableDoris I replied as I thought the same advice would be helpful and still apply when thinking about promotions at the different grades within the CS. It may also help others considering how best to navigate their careers in the CS.
