Moving to Petersfield

I was wondering if there are any Petersfield mama's on here that can help me out! We (my husband, 6 month old daughter and myself) are looking to relocate this year from Surrey (originally from North London). We have visited the town a few times now and we really liked the Heath, cafes and general feel of the town. It seems to tick lots of boxes for us, but there are a few 'sticking' points we are still struggling with:

  1. It seems the only leisure centre is Taro, which looks slightly underwhelming compare to what we have become used to over here in Surrey. The reviews online are also pretty bad! Is there only nearby local private health clubs or anything 'fancier' on offer?? Or any plans to regenerate this in the pipelines as it seems a shame it's not 'keeping' up with the growing town.
  2. Again the Lido looks ok enough, but nowhere near as nice as the one in Hampton or Guildford which is a shame. But I suppose the Guildford one is not too far. Any plans for regeneration??
  3. It's a shame the town has no independent or more niche (such as Everyman, etc) cinema on offer. I feel it would be a very popular thing if they did. This makes me question if there is any kind of nightlife or evening culture there? Equally what would be the best closed cinema and realistically is it drivable?
  4. Is it possible to find good nannies or cleaners in the area?
  5. How easy is it to make mum friends? I got the sense there were lots of young families around and got quite a few waves and smiles on our visits with the little one which seems a good sign. But being a new mama who spends 99% of her time alone and at home is always a concern.

Any thoughts in general on the area/life there would be super appreciated!

There’s a great yarn shop!

I would move there like a shot and get out of crummy Brighton - sadly houses in Petersfield are mega expensive and out of my price range but a lovely place to bring up children -

There is a Leisure Centre in Haslemere and a newer one in Bordon. Also you could check out Old Thorns in Liphook.

The nearest independent cinema is The Living Room Cinema, in Liphook.

There are theatres in Portsmouth, Guilford, Woking, Chichester, Basingstoke and Southampton.

Local am-dram groups often put on some pretty good productions. The Haslemere Players are very good, performing in Haslemere Hall. Look on the Haslemere Hall website. Also, the MAD Company in Liphook does a great pantomime every February. The Petersfield Hall also hosts some good productions from local groups.

It's a nice place to live. You're right on the doorstep of the South Downs and less than an hour from some great beaches for the children.

On 1, I second old Thorns. Or you can join Champneys. Lastly is the Everyone at Alton. A bit of a trek, but some really cool climbing stuff, classes, soft play, and everything is new topped off with a nice spa. and works with a Taro platinum membership.

On 2, you sound a bit ridiculous. Guildford has a population about 10 times the size of Petersfield. Of course some of the facilities in what is effectively a city are going to be larger than a small town, but the Lido is clean, friendly and actually quite new, so a bit of perspective wouldn’t go amiss. There is no ‘shame’ there whatsoever.

On 3, more ‘shame’. There is a brand new cinema in Liphook which isn’t far to drive at all, and the Petersfield nightlife is largely pubs, bars and some nice restaurants, but that’s where a direct and regular train service to Guildford and Portsmouth and even Waterloo comes in. Great stuff nearby but not in your face, and we don’t have to deal with the mess, noise or fallout.

its not clear to me that you’ve grasped what is quite unique about Petersfield which is a town with a gorgeous Heath, Lido, playing fields and nice community, packed with some good national (Waitrose, Waterstones, Robert Dyas) type shops, as well as a bunch of independents (deli, Annie Jones, Six restaurant etc.) which is close to everything (whether via road or rail) but manages itself to go slightly under the radar and avoid the fallout, crime, anti-social behaviour of larger places, which is exactly what we were looking to avoid when we left London.

Feels like you might be more suited to somewhere a bit larger, although that will inevitably come with those issues, and as a parent to two young children, that simply wasn’t worth the trade-off for us, particularly when it’s all so easy to get to anyway.

Cami101 - I was just wondering did you ever move to Petersfield and how did you find it with young kids? We are looking at Buriton near Petersfield.
Thanks
