Inspired by hearing today about someone who paid £246 for a demo CD by Journey South who were X Factor contestants in 2005.

Mine is more prosaic than that. A very expensive juicer I never used.

Diamonds.

I paid about $1000 (australian) for a DVD player years ago. How did I know life was about to go digital?

Then there's the bread-maker, the ice-cream churn (shudders)

A full size video arcade machine

dylansss · 06/09/2023 20:42

A full sized video arcade machine isn't a waste of money. Its awesome. I think I might buy one myself.

Loafbeginsat60 · 06/09/2023 20:48

A horse that I couldn't ride.

A pale grey, very light wool twill Jil Sander suit, circa 1994, training year of my first profession.

Lord knows what devilry enticed me. It was so fucking expensive my then boyfriend turned pale, then red when he heard the price. (Though I was paying,) It was a perfectly lovely thing. Great for swanning around London. But it seemed to make me sweat. Even worse it’s the only thing I’ve ever worn and encountered someone else wearing exactly the same outfit. It was supposed to make me feel competent and confident. It never did.

Eventually left that career. Can’t recall what became of the suit …

A robot hoover that just randomly wandered all over the place pleasing itself, getting stuck on everything. And the cats were scared of it so that was that idea down the drain !

WarmWinterSun · 06/09/2023 20:58

A hat for a wedding costing hundreds of pounds. Ridiculous price. It’s been worn twice in a decade. Very silly!

Sahara123 · 06/09/2023 20:59

Oh and a bread maker that made horrible fluffy bread . It woke the dog up barking when I set it to bake bread for the morning. I may be ruled by my pets ..

CalistoNoSolo · 06/09/2023 20:59

A cream coloured knee length wool Barbour coat. It was £££ and languishes unworn in my wardrobe.

Tronkmanton · 06/09/2023 20:59

Some outrageously expensive professional ‘trendy’ family pictures when the DCs were small. They’re so awful but I can’t bear to chuck them in the bin so they’re languishing in a cupboard.

TheThingIsYeah · 06/09/2023 21:21

A caravan.

A great purchase maybe if you are retired or a teacher, but personally never had enough annual leave to use it enough so a bit of an expensive mistake. Plus there’s the insurance, servicing, towbars, reduced mpg when towing and site fees. Caravanning is not the cheap holiday people think it is, and it was quite an eye-opener.

Expensive camera. Ex worked in a place where he got deals on this kind of thing. It was worth about 1k and I got it for 450. Problem was that it was ridiculously heavy. I had no idea how to use all the different settings. I took it on a few day trips before getting fed up with lugging it around. Sold it and went back to taking photos on my phone.

Laiste · 06/09/2023 21:38

These Badgley Mischka sandals.

🙄

Oh and a £££ Hobbs trench coat which i look like a sack of spuds in.

Member589500 · 22/10/2023 21:48

Those sandals are utterly beautiful

BakedTattie · 22/10/2023 22:03

a pony for my children to recreate my childhood. They hate it.

2 mulberry handbags costing over £5000. While I love them, I’m terrified to use and damage them. So they sit in the cupboard. My £5 primark one has more pockets anyway
