Medical things you didn’t know?

Just watching a medical drama and wondered what happens if you die on the operating table? Do they just sew you back up without repairing anything inside?

but also had me thinking what other medical things didn’t you know until you maybe experienced them or learned?

Sorry to ask, but what is qu**t? If you can’t say the word, what does it rhyme with?

Diet.

An absence of business.

Saying it leads to a disaster of a shift, with patients everywhere, all of them doing unpredictable things like setting fire to the curtains or jousting with the drip stands.

Probably whilst naked. And vomitting.

Never, ever use the Q word.

When I had my lower leg amutated, they warned me about phantom pain, which I have had and can be horrible. But they didn't really mention (or maybe I just don't remember properly) all the non painful phantom sensations.
Its lessened over time but I still sometimes get an itchy foot, or feel like my sock is slipping off, or that the seam is tickling, or that my toenail polish needs more time to dry- all on the foot that isn't there. I have been walking with my prosthetic and felt like I had a blister on my heel, or that the tounge in my shoe is folded down and digging in- which it wasn't.
Its so weird- I have woken up being annoyed that I cant move the crumbs in my bed that are itching my ankle- because there is nothing there, no crumbs and no ankle to be itched.

My friend had a mid forearm amputation and told me she often feels a really strong need to crack her knuckles which isnt satiated by cracking the knuckles of her other hand. Also that she gets a 'sunburn' type feeling on her hand that isn't there which can last hours.

@CharityJane
Its like saying Macbeth at the theatre 😂

BoreOfWhabylon · 04/07/2023 23:48

No red and white flowers together in a vase either. Beg, borrow or steal a bloom of another colour to include as well.

I didn't realise the phantom sensations would be so specific or last such a long time! I'm sorry you've been through that.

I remember being amazed that a blood transfusion was just adding a pint of blood into your system. It didn't involve swapping all the blood from one body with donated blood.

Plentiful · 04/07/2023 21:18

That the ‘old’ kidney or kidneys aren’t usually removed when you have a kidney transplant. They’re left in your body unless there’s a medical reason to remove them

What the?

Absolutely ❤️

Sugarplumfury · 04/07/2023 23:53

Bogofftosomewherehot. I know a lot of medics and your loved one will have been treated with respect, the utmost care and dignity. I hope it provided a little comfort to know that out of something so truly awful, your loved one’s amazing gift, meant something also truly wonderful and life affirming happened. I hope you can hold that thought when you go to sleep tonight

Recently deceased bodies don't smell any worse than they did just before they died.

I've carried out last offices for many patients over the years. We were definitely opening the window to let the soul out. Superstition I suppose.

Yep same. Except we don’t do it in A&E as there are no windows in the cubicles. Bodies usually don’t start to smell for a few hours or more, even in mid summer

in a hospital or how? and why not?

Growing up in Scandinavia I missed loads of the British superstitions 😁and I often have white and red flowers as they are pretty together.

An operation has been performed that has cured some specific types of OCD. It is looking increasingly like it’s not a mental illness, but a physiological one. In order to look at something the brain has to perform four tasks in a specific order. Should one step be missed often enough, then this can create one of the forms of OCD.

AuditAngel · 04/07/2023 23:56

Enko it is often thought to represent blood and bandages.

That's not one I grew up with. I will stick with my white and red flowers :)

BoreOfWhabylon · 04/07/2023 23:57

@Enko in a hospital. It's a nursing superstition. Means there'll be a death, unless you break up the red and white with a different coloured flower.

SockQueen · 04/07/2023 23:57

chrystlha · 04/07/2023 23:52

What the?

Yup - new kidneys are put in a different place from your existing ones, usually in the lower left/right part of the abdomen and most of the time the old ones are left alone.

For other organs like liver, heart etc, the original one is removed.

Catspyjamas17 · 04/07/2023 23:57

Hope it's not bad luck in a garden, I've got dozens of red and white snapdragons together!

It comes from the Great War. It signifies blood and bandages, and predicts an imminent death.

Definitely not in hospital or care settings, and when I send flowers to my mother (a retired nurse) I always very carefully specify no red and white. The florist always knows grasps the significance.

You can't get heart cancer.

Yes you can. My husband was told he had either a sarcoma or lymphoma. He died.

You can't get heart cancer.

You can but it's rare.

You can't get heart cancer.

You can, usually angiosarcoma. Very rare but possible.

TappingTed · 05/07/2023 00:03

@DeNeushoornHeeftEenHoorn a sub-arachnoid (brain) haemorrhage I think. Massive brain bleed which can occur at the point of orgasm in some cases.
It can also be a benign “lightning” headache though too…

Mine aren't painful and are rare now so I'm not bothered by them but when they happened quite frequently they usually happened when I was just falling asleep or that time when you are just waking up and you are still not quite out of your dream yet.
I wonder if it's because I normally have both legs in my dreams, maybe my brain takes a minute to remember lol
