Medical things you didn’t know?

Just watching a medical drama and wondered what happens if you die on the operating table? Do they just sew you back up without repairing anything inside?

but also had me thinking what other medical things didn’t you know until you maybe experienced them or learned?

Right I have had enough of windows opening now, after 15 pages!

I had a procedure recently called Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (try saying that after a few pints!), it is a relatively new thing, some years anyway. It means I don't have to take blood thinning medication anymore. I have Atrial Fibrillation (heart rhythm issue), and it can cause stroke if a clot breaks off. The clot usually forms in the Left Atrium, so now that it is closed off, my stroke risk is the same as someone without Afib. Amazing stuff. I was very lucky to be a candidate for it. I am a bleeder, and had gastric bleed so the risk of bleeding was high if I had to take thinners. I saw a recording of the op, one that the surgeon had in his arsenal for the students. Hope it wasn't me! It is a Watchman device.

I never knew any of this, i.e. strokes, arrythmia, left atrium, Watchman etc.

Blood is still flowing through your left atrium, it is the appendage that has been blocked. The appendage is like a small sack that comes off the left atrium.

Ha, yes it is the appendage that is blocked off. The surgeon mentioned to me when I woke up that I had a "chicken wing" appendage. I got hungry then! Amazing what can be done now with medical advances.

@Keykat yes, and often with a plastic tube in your thigh.

That patella fasciitis is a thing. (Thank goodness, I was worried I was developing arthritis even though it didn't really match the description of arthritis pain.)

Stomacharmeleon · 16/07/2023 10:52

@Catsmere I thought I had lost the use or my feet when I had that. They thought it was from prolonged use of flip flops. Did some stretches and supported my feet and all good.

Mine is vomiting poo. I never realised that was a thing until my intestine ' mechanically failed' after surgery. It was not a pleasurable experience.... and sent me back to theatre.

Also has necrotising facititius which started with a small blood bruise. By the next day I had turned black (and was so lucky as I was due to fly to Majorca) I was unconscious and needed six operations to debride my stomach. It took a year and a half to Heal properly and I caught it again during the healing process.

@Stomacharmeleon VOMITING POO and NECROTISING FASCIITIS????

Fucking hell!!!!

Plantar fasciitis was bad enough, it’s what sent me to a podiatrist ten years ago, give or take. This knee pain was bad enough to make me nauseated, and cause a nasty flare up of GERD, which hadn’t happened for years - it’s usually well under control.

Gilead · 16/07/2023 21:45

I have a stoma, got a blockage, was also vomiting poo. I was in hospital for three weeks!

My daughter had heart surgery at 4 months. On the ward any children due surgery had a dental check up and loads had teeth removed a couple had all their teeth extracted. My daughter had anti biotic cover before her routine check ups for many years. She's 41 now so things will undoubtedly have changed

My friend who has worked in nursing for 30 years in the UK and abroad has never heard of the opening a window thing.

Hahahahahaha
definitely not! Who would lie about it 😂

I remember my cousin telling me about her surgery to fix her squint and she said that they put her eye on her cheek while it happened. I don’t know if she really believes that or not though. I assumed that she was correct so it’s fascinated to find out it’s not true.

  1. you need a heart beating person to donate organs, it's strict criteria for obvious reasons
  2. more people can donate soft tissues such as skin/bone/cornea
  3. a high BP will kill you eventually
  4. a severe headache during sex is an emergency
  5. urine pregnancy tests in hospital are the same as you can buy over the counter

Why is a severe headache during sex an emergency?

As a recipient of a donated heart, please know @Bogofftosomewherehot that your loved one, when their own time on earth ended, gave life to 3 very grateful recipients. My donor saved my life, allowed me to be a mother to my special needs child, a sister, a daughter. The impact of your families brave decision to donate will undoubtedly ripple on for generations and THAT is what you should think of. Thank you to you and all families who choose to donate.

Bogofftosomewherehot · 17/08/2023 06:22

Thank you @Jeelypieces20storeys, that was lovely to read as I got up this morning. I wish you lots of good health, for both you and your daughter ( I too have children with SEN). Take good care. 😃
