Diet Coke

It’s so popular! I get really confused about the unhealthy element as everyone always says fizzy drinks are bad for you!

I thought Diet Coke was zero calories? Is it literally zero calories, ie you can drink a can and wouldn’t put on weight, or can you still put on weight somehow?

i don’t actually drink it but DH does (and so many people in my office!!)

What are confused about? Health is about more than just calories.

I'm drinking one right now. It's very cold and I'm using a straw. It's 250ml and I'm tempted to have another one.
It's not great because fizzy drinks even sugar free are not good for your teeth and because it has fake, processed sweeteners but I used to drink so much wine so I see my 2 cans of diet coke a week as good enough. In time I hope to drop it to one or two cans a month when out socialising as I don't drink alcohol anymore and don't like juices.

They are literally zero calories but it is not a healthy choice. In the press this week has been a news update on Diet Coke and the risk of aspartame causing cancer is large amounts. I no longer drink Diet Coke after I watched a friend use it to clean her gold jewellery and all the dirt and crap came off instantly. It can't be good for you to drink it daily.

I'm obsessed by Diet Coke - it's my one true addiction.

Whilst it's zero calories, that's not all that health is. There's sweeteners, flavours and colourings in it - none of which are probably in the top ten health foods!

Ultra processed chemicals including a sweetener thought to cause cancer.
Carbonated Water, Colour (Caramel E150d), Sweeteners (Aspartame, Acesulfame K), Natural Flavourings Including Caffeine, Phosphoric Acid, Citric Acid. Contains a Source of Phenylalanine

Artificial sweeteners can cause changes to gut bacteria which can raise blood sugar levels. There is also the question of are some of them carcinogenic. The phosphorus in fizzy drinks can deplete calcium in teeth and bones.

Thanks everyone. Sorry my op was not well written. I guess I have two Qs

  1. do you actually put on no weight even if you drank three Diet Cokes daily? For example if I ate three chocolates daily I’d eventually put on weight
  2. the health impact which some of you have helpfully started to comment on

You wouldn’t necessarily gain weight if you ate three chocolates a day, you would gain weight if you consumed more calories than you burned.

Health is much more than weight

bluechameleon · 04/07/2023 19:13

According to Chris Van Tulleken's new book, there is evidence that people who drink diet fizzy drinks put on weight. It's something to do with the way the artificial sweeteners affect your appetite I think, I can't remember exactly.

badluckorbadvibes · 04/07/2023 19:15

I have stopped buying them with the recent news about aspartame.
