Mine are "nickname" when you mean "shortening" and "double-barrelled" when you mean "hyphenated"

Balls. I dictated that and it’s come out nonsensically?

basically in the UK people talk about year six and we know that you find out how old the kid is by adding on five years

You've highlighted another good one.

English people forgetting/ not caring that there are 3 other countries in the UK that operate their own systems, including for education.

erikbloodaxe · 03/07/2023 21:39

Ect instead of Etc

Using bring and take incorrectly

heymammy · 03/07/2023 21:40

RelaxedPigeon · 03/07/2023 20:02

Myself.

I don't even need to explain it because almost everyone will be nodding.

Nodding

kikisparks · 03/07/2023 21:40

Both mentioned already- Draw instead of drawer. Brought instead of bought.

Theos · 03/07/2023 21:42

But if it is the context of education, it’s easy to say what year they are in

Whatsun · 03/07/2023 21:44

People who accuse others of drip feeding and people who accuse others of performance parenting. Both of them give me the rage.

kikisparks · 03/07/2023 21:44

Also calling a lot of Scottish things (use of gotten, Santa, celebrating Halloween) “Americanisms”.

IsItHalfTermYetHelp · 03/07/2023 21:44

“Year 6” is often relevant when discussing an 11 year old though because it makes a difference to the advice eg walking home to an empty house compared to a child at secondary school.

Our schools broke up last week for the summer holidays, it always brings out confusion.

Year 6 and 7 would both be primary school here.

comeondover · 03/07/2023 21:48

Think, instead of such as, eg or like. 'I had popped into the supermarket for a few items, think cucumbers, shower gel and dishwasher tabs, when...' Sometimes it's followed by something more vague, as if a more specific detail will out the poster. 'I had popped into the supermarket for a few items, think food and toiletries and cleaning supplies, when...'

Ect. I don't know how it happens. It can't be autocorrect, and c and t are not close enough on the keyboard to fumble them like this.

jocktamsonsbairn · 03/07/2023 21:48

Why not say my 13 year old year 6 child? That way everyone gets it and you might even get better range of responses.

A women instead of woman.

The same people seem fully able to distinguish between man and men but stick a 'wo' on the front and apparently it becomes extremely confusing and complicated.

This

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 03/07/2023 21:50

‘Makes my teeth itch’ genuinely makes me teeth itch and I’m not just saying that to be funny 😄

As pp said, ‘que’ instead of queue or cue. It’s not hard. I don’t think que is even a word in English??

TheMoth · 03/07/2023 21:51

Using the verb cringe, as an adjective, rather than cringeworthy. And even then, they're not really using it quite right.

'I find it so cringe'
Or
'I thought it was really cringey'.
Or
'Mr Birling is properly cringe when he says the Titanic won't sink. '

Yes, yes, I know language change in action etc., but there are so many other words that work much better.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 03/07/2023 21:51

"They was living there for a couple of years" FFS it's WERE - how bloody hard is that? It's the most basic grammar.

And yes to 'myself' - gives me the rage.

Stigsmother · 03/07/2023 21:52

Saying someone has been given "free reign"
Has nothing to do with reckless monarchy, and everything to do with horses.
When riding, if you give your horse a "free" ie loose rein, it can do as it pleases.

It's because people pronounce it 'eksetra'. I do remember writing ect when I was in primary school, because I don't think I'd seen it written down.

LapinR0se · 03/07/2023 20:13

Phased instead of fazed 😡

Came on here to say this one!

marshmallowfinder · 03/07/2023 21:56

Everything mentioned so far!
Apostrophes for plurals on the name board. For example, "there are lots of little Mabel's in reception class at the moment..."

Also your instead of you're.

Breath instead of breathe. Fucking irritating!

Lollypaloozy · 03/07/2023 21:57

For me it's when people mix up 'borrowed' and 'lent'.

"He borrowed me some money"

No, no he didn't.

BiggerBrighterBetter · 03/07/2023 21:57

It's your lookout! No it really isn't! It's luck. This really winds me up as it just doesn't make any sense.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 03/07/2023 21:58

Posting in Chat or AIBU when pedant's corner would be more appropriate.

I was sat. We were sat.
I was stood. We was stood.

This. Really hate it. It's everywhere nowadays, but seems specially popular on Mumsnet.
