I love Glee. Always have. I’ve just binged watched it again in a week with dh grumbling about it. He doesn’t think I should watch it anymore because of Mark Salling. I don’t see it like that. I can enjoy the character of Noah, without liking the person itself.

I mean…yeah he fucked up but he’s dead now. Can’t really do much about that

I can't, no. And I find Glee incredibly hard to watch in any event because of everything that has happened to the cast since it was filmed.

EauNeu · 03/07/2023 18:49

I can't watch the first couple of series of the thick of it for that reason. Which is a shame. The same person was also in a brilliant show called people like us which i'll also never be able to watch again.

Riverlee · 03/07/2023 18:49

A lot of people still listen to Michael Jackson who has all sort of allegations made against him, and probably what went on years ago wouldn’t be accepted today.

Mrsjayy · 03/07/2023 18:56

I loved glee me and the dds bonded over it,but I can't watch it I did try it but it's really tainted and also hasn't aged that well.

Soubriquet · 03/07/2023 18:57

Some of it has been a bit tainted yeah, but then I just love it anyway.

I think it’s a nice way to honour Naya. She was fantastic playing Santana and it’s a good LGB program too. Wasn’t too keen on the transing of Coach Beiste…I mean, you already had Unique and through most of the seasons, Shannon was proud of being a masculine woman.

Which person are you referring to?

I think it's a difficult area. I think Kevin Spacey is a great actor, I think Roman Polanski is a brilliant director. But I now won't watch anything by Polanski.

Do we destroy Eric Gill's art, or Byron's poetry? How do we divorce the author/actor/artist/whoever from their art?

I was a massive Lostprophets fan as a teen. I wish I could still enjoy the music but I just can't knowing what he was doing while he was writing and performing.

He ruined that work for his band mates too.

Absolute scum bag.

Soubriquet · 03/07/2023 19:06

Lostprophets…yeah that went badly didn’t it. I still listen to one song…. It’s a guilty pleasure.

honeynutcornfllakes · 03/07/2023 19:07

I think it depends how much the individual has to do with creating and performing the work.

One person out of a massive production, that they didn't have that much involvement in overall, I think I could overlook that and enjoy the work of innocent people that worked hard at it.

One person in a very small or individual line of work is much harder to see past.

Absolutely horrific.

I so want to enjoy the music as I have lovely memories associated with it but it just feels so wrong.

Fearne Cotton appears to have been quite fragile since all of that and has slowly backed away from many of her tv and radio jobs. The impact on those closest to him will have been immense 😕

BarelyLiterate · 03/07/2023 19:18

There is no consistency about how paedophile entertainers are treated. Why is Michael Jackson’s music deemed acceptable to be played on mainstream radio, when Gary Glitter’s is not?
I’m cynical enough to think the real answer to that question is commercial, rather than moral. Jackson’s music is still enormously popular & delivers big audiences which radio stations can sell to their advertisers, while Glitter’s music is considered naff & uncommercial.

Actually…that’s a really good point.

When I was young, I used to really like Rolf Harris. I watched a lot of his animal programs, and his music was fun and quirky..yet he is (rightly) vilified now. You never see anything by him on tv or radio anymore, but Michael Jackson, you do.

It’s strange

The difference is that Michael Jackson was never convicted for any crimes towards children, unlike the others mentioned. So, not so strange.

honeynutcornfllakes · 03/07/2023 19:25

Michael Jackson wasn't found guilty, he was acquitted on all counts.

Rolf Harris and Gary Glitter were both convicted.

BadgeronaMoped · 03/07/2023 19:26

Every time my DC have the Lego Batman Movie on I always wonder why it features so much Michael Jackson music. It's so weird, and US programmes/films STILL use that Gary Glitter "hey!" song (Rock & Roll)... even after his convictions. I mean, it's a great catchy tune but there are other great songs out there. Use those instead!

Random789 · 03/07/2023 19:33

Idon't hav a problem at all in separating an offending person from their creative product. People are more than one thing. What cause is served by erecting a cordon sanitaire around a person who has done terrible things?
In some specific circumstances you might do it to avoid them profiting from your consumption of whatever artwork they have participated in creating. But as a general principal? What would be the value of that?

Absolutely this

People will also say that Glitter had convictions and Jackson didnt, but in my view its clear that Jackson did abuse children.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/07/2023 19:45

I'm not having a problem watching the US House of Cards at the moment because the character of Frank Underwood is so thoroughly evil.

I can't listen to anything by him, gives me the creeps. I also can't rewatch House of Cards either which is a shame as it's brilliant.

CalistoNoSolo · 03/07/2023 20:11

No, I have zero tolerance for any kind of violence against women and children, whether sexual or not. I cannot separate a paedophile or man who beats up/rapes women with their 'art'. These people debase everything they do with how they behave and how they treat people. And i'm really suprised that anyone can still listen to Lost Prophets - a guilty pleasure is having chocolate when you're dieting, not listening to a paedophile singing.

Same here and I had thought People Like Us was brilliant.

GarlicGrace · 03/07/2023 20:32

Yes. If we rejected the work of everyone with disgusting personal qualities, we'd have virtually no art or science. We have to separate the person from their product, intellectually at least.

I switch off sometimes when the creative content seems designed to support the person's fetish. I don't watch any Woody Allen for that reason, and otherwise I guess it happens once every few months.

I was literally going to say the same thing. I instinctively miss out those series on a rewatch, which is a shame because those episodes are well acted with some classic moments.
