Aldi fruit

An Aldi has opened up by us and I'm tempted to give it a try instead of Tesco. Is their fruit and veg any good? Don't want to waste money and time if it's known to be poor quality.

Many thanks

I only buy from my local Aldi if I’m using it straight away. It has a very short shelf life. I prefer Tesco or my local market stall. It keeps. So much is wasted, that I avoid both Aldi and Lidl, for fruit and veg.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 03/07/2023 11:16

It's hugely variable - give it a try and see for yourself.

I run a food bank and we get plenty of stock from Aldi that is good for another week after we receive it, alongside mushy avos etc.

SoSoSoSo · 03/07/2023 11:21

It seems to be store dependent. I have absolutely no trouble with my local Aldi store.

It's absolutely dreadful in my local stores. Goes off so quickly. Enough to make me shop elsewhere!

MandyMotherOfBrian · 03/07/2023 11:25

Yeah, same as PPs - hugely variable. DDs both at Uni have stopped buying from both Lidl and Aldi for fresh fruit and veg as they need to do a big shop for the week as they’re out of their way and they can’t go every other day. They’ve both concluded (in different cities) that it’s not cost effective as they end up chucking it. Tesco or market stalls are better where they are.

Chocolateship · 03/07/2023 11:33

I find it depends, berries are fine as they don't last long in this house haha but I don't really get any other fresh stuff aside from tomatoes there as it does seem to turn quite quickly. If I go to the one near work though it lasts a while so seems to be store dependent! I'd say it's worth a go, just buy small amounts and see. I personally don't really like a lot of their stuff and find prices now comparable with elsewhere; but lots love it.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 03/07/2023 11:36

Another disappointed in Aldi fruit and veg. It’s okay -sometimes very cheap- but only if you are going to use it in two or three days . Tesco can be okay in the fridge of nearly two weeks. We've just given up on Waitrose completely : twice the price for half the quality.

Aldi do have very good cheese and yogurt though, and their biscuits and crisp breads are excellent l

Reugny · 03/07/2023 11:37

It's store dependent.

Local small Aldi half the stuff seems on the turn and goes off quickly particularly during the uni holidays.

In the larger Aldi the stuff lasts longer but the stuff in the Lidl (which is nearer) lasts the longest. Probably because the Lidl sells out of a lot of it's fruit and vegs most days.

DidItMatter · 03/07/2023 11:37

It goes off really quickly. I’ve stopped going to aldi or Lidl due to this

Minikievs · 03/07/2023 11:41

Mine goes off so quickly that it's actually more cost effective to buy it at M&S as it lasts literally three times as long.
Even stuff like cucumbers that last a bit longer, at Aldi one end of them is always really thin so you have to use more of it.
Avocados are ok at mine, berries are dreadful. Apples ok, satsumas dreadful.
I only buy F&V at Aldi as a last resort

BrownEyesBlueSkies · 03/07/2023 11:43

It’s rubbish, it goes off very quickly.

goingtotown · 03/07/2023 12:01

Aldi fruit & veg is only good the day it's purchased.
M&S is more expensive but it lasts until I shop again the following week so no waste.

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/07/2023 12:06

I’ve just eaten a peach from Aldi, bought on Friday. The grapes bought at the same time have been eaten. The blueberries and raspberries are fine too. It really does depend on the local store.

Peony654 · 03/07/2023 12:08

I've always found it fine, no different to other supermarkets. But we tend to eat it quickly, and I never check dates on anything anyway

Newtrix · 03/07/2023 15:56

Thanks everyone, think I'll just stick to Tesco for now as I like the fresh stuff to last a week.

No issues here with any fruit or veg

MaryJean87 · 03/07/2023 16:10

It varies. The only fruit I've had problems with are the bananas and peaches. Some have been overripe and mushy as soon as I've got them home. But if you check before buying it'll be fine.

Other things make it worth while though. And to be fair the fruit and veg at ours is very good. The meat is generally worth the trip, and the cheese. And alcohol. And of course the middle aisle of wonder.

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 03/07/2023 16:17

I use two different branches of Aldi and the fruit and veg has always been absolutely fine from both.

mewkins · 03/07/2023 16:18

It's fine here but I don't buy bananas as no one likes them. I buy fruit and veg for packed lunches on Sundays and it lasts ok until the end of the week.
