Question about Game of Theones?

I’ve not read the books but

  • Why did Cersei want Margaery to marry Tommen? She didn’t seem to want her to marry Joffrey so seems odd.
  • Olenna said her future had been stolen from her when her son, granddaughter and grandson died, but she had other girls around her that referred to her as “nanna”. So did she have more children? Then surely the Tyrell name isn’t dead?
  • Why did Cersei want to keep the throne? I never got the impression from the show she was that bothered about being queen.

  1. The public were loosing faith in their rule because Joff was terrible. Margaery was winning the peoples trust. Plus, her house was the most powerful/rich one left that would team with the Lannisters.
  1. Not a lot of focus is placed on "the main line" of a family in these stories. So from the first born of each generation is best.
  1. Cersei always hated how her brothers/uncles/nephews/sons were trained to rule and she was not. She saw herself as the more capable ruler ot of all of them.

  1. By then I think it might have become 'better the devil you know'. I think Cersei thought she could win gratitude by helping Margery but also had belief she could get rid of her if she needed to (as she then tried to do).
  2. If sons are dead, the name is dead. Girls marry, change their names and become part of someone else's house. Olenna had 1 son and 2 daughters. So only 1/3 can carry the name.
  3. Cersei loved power. She especially had come to resent people having power over her (her father forcing her to marry, Robert Baratheon etc). Being Queen means no one has power over you, in theory. Of course, she came to realise that is not true either.

Cersei didn't particularly want Margery to marry Tommen, but Tommen was keen after Margery visited him and night and got in his favour - and she was popular with the people. Cersei gave the High Sparrow power in the hope he'd get rid of Laurres Tyrell & Margery would follow.

Cersei (rightly) felt that she'd only been passed over because she was female, and wanted the throne for its power, status and control. Plus she's a massive narcissist
