My little sister and her partner are moving into their first home in a couple of weeks time, i plan on putting together a hamper with bits and bobs they may not have thought to get and some treats. So far I have tea, coffee, biscuits, fancy hand wash, a nice candle, a first aid kit and a nice blanket. What else would you add?

Bottle of fizz, congratulations card, takeaway voucher, washing up liquid, Allen key set...

You sound lovely.

murasaki · 02/07/2023 22:13

Phillips screwdriver, a nice cake...

There's a tradition (Italian ?) of
Bread - so that you never go hungry
Wine - so that you never go thirsty
Salt - so that life never looses its taste

Fire extinguisher / blanket?!
And yes tools!

possibly a bit practical but defo useful

murasaki · 02/07/2023 22:18

I like that tradition. Covers most bases!

A set of scented tealights plus holders maybe?

Stuff for a bacon butty on moving in day might go down well. I'd have appreciated that.

When I moved into first house with a partner post uni, my dad presented me with a tool kit, I still have most of it 20 years on...it was his way of showing love.

TheNameIsDickDarlington · 02/07/2023 22:36

Tool kit of some kind, picture hooks (the day after I moved into my first house I went round and put up all our pictures and it made it feel really homey)

Tea towels?

galmom · 02/07/2023 23:33

Oh love these suggestions Thankyou!
Will defo add the toolkit and the traditions to my list!

Indoor house plant? Orchid? Green plant? Lidl have several larger in door plants this week with the option of a pot too.

galmom · 02/07/2023 23:40

@CC4712 my sister is TERRIBLE with plants so I'd feel bad buying one knowing it was already doomed haha but thankyou for the suggestion!

Definitely Allen keys, screwdriver, picture hooks etc.

BreviloquentBastard · 02/07/2023 23:40

My mam did us a hamper and it had some great stuff.

  • a little herb and spice kit, not something I was thinking about in that first week but a godsend as I love cooking and just had nothing in to season with
  • little screw driver set
  • a weeny potted plant because she's a green thumb and thinks plants make home
  • couple of bottles of wine and two glasses in case we hadn't got round to unpacking our glassware
  • mini toothpaste and toothbrushes, because she correctly guessed I would forget where our toothbrushes were on the first day
thedogisstaring · 02/07/2023 23:46

Allan key set is genius! One of those things always randomly need for flat pack stuff. If your budget stretches, an electric screwdriver . About £30 and a game changer for any little diy jobs.

cherryassam · 02/07/2023 23:52

My parents’ kit for me when I moved out included a radiator bleeding key, something I didn’t know existed until I lived on my own! I know it’s incredibly mundane but easy to add in to a tool kit.

galmom · 02/07/2023 23:55

Such a good idea @cherryassam ! I had no idea what that was until I moved out either lol

No plants then 😂

Does the house have any views? A small set of binoculars? Our new house has alot of birds and wildlife. A bird bath or bird feeder?

If its more practical things- a good pair of scissors, sellotape, Stanley knife to cut open moving boxes, pen and paper.

Do they have any curtains/blinds? Dunelm have these temporary ones for £5/£6.

My friend did this for me and packed it all in a bucket! Which was incredibly useful. There was a set of screwdrivers, a torch, big black bin liners, and candles for a power cut with a lighter. I thin a pair of scissors would be handy too.
